"Richard Earl Rupert is my father. He passed a few years ago, but he’s very much alive in my heart, and clearly in my genetics. He met my mother at Mickey’s Dairy Bar in Madison, and less than a year later I was the first of their three sons.

I never planned on being a father myself. Then I met my wife, and her two-and-a-half-year-old daughter Kay — on the same day. I’ve always said I was lucky enough to fall in love with two women. Our sons Kellen and Richard Colson, named for my father, rounded out the greatest gift, challenge, and reward I’ve ever known.

Any parent who tells you they aren’t making it up as they go, I don’t believe them. As a chef of 40 years, my job has been to honor the ingredients in front of me and get them to the plate without messing them up. Same could be said for fatherhood. Except for the plate thing.
