Harvested softneck garlic? Time to braid! π§
About a day or two after harvest, while the stems are still flexible, is the sweet spot for braiding. If you wait too long, the stems can dry out and become stiff, making them harder to work with.
How to braid garlic π
1οΈβ£ Start with three bulbs lined up and braid the stems like hair
2οΈβ£ Add one new bulb each time you cross a stem
3οΈβ£ Tie off the top and hang to finish curing!
Practical, beautiful, and perfect for storage β¨

Can you spot the difference? π
Take a look at these garlic bulbs... why are the ones on the left so much smaller than the ones on the right?
A N S W E R π
β
The bulbs on the left were left with their garlic scapes attached!
When scapes aren't removed, the plant puts energy into the flower bud instead of sizing up the bulb. The result? Smaller garlic bulbs at harvest.
This side-by-side makes it clearβif you're after big, beautiful bulbs, don't skip harvesting those scapes! π±π§

β Question of the Week: Wondering how to store your garlic scapes?
Here are a couple methods!
1) R E F R I G E R A T O R
After harvesting your scapes, put them in a plastic bag and fold it over. This will allow some condensation to escape but also keep the scapes slightly moist so they don't dry out. Then, but the bag in the crisper drawer. We've been able to get them to store for months like this, but of course, monitor them so they don't go bad.
2) F R E E Z I N G
Wash and dry the scapes, cut to the size that you want, put them in a bag, and freeze. We vacuum seal ours, but you can also use a normal freezer bag. Also, they can be blanched, but it is not necessary.
.. M O R E
Garlic scapes can also be dehydrated, freeze-dried, and pickled. Do some research and find recipes that work for you, and you'll be able to enjoy the fresh taste of scapes year round! π

Some of our garlic scapes are officially ready for picking! π§
The scape on the left has made a full curlβperfect for harvesting. The scape in the middle still needs a little more time to curl, and the scape on the right can be picked now, but we'll wait a couple more days until it forms a full curl for peak flavor and tenderness.
Check out our reel at 2PM to see Cindy pick some of our Romanian Red garlic scapes! π

Did you pick your garlic scapes, only to see them continuing to grow? π€
Don't worryβit happens and your garlic will be okay! π
In these photos, the scapes were harvested right before they made their first curl. But just a few days later, you can see new growth starting again. This can happen and it isn't something to stress about!
The important part? Since the flower bud was already removed the plant will start to direct its energy into growing a bigger, healthier bulb. π§
You don't need to pick the garlic scape again since the flower bud has already been removed. Any regrowth will only extend a few inches before stopping, as the plant is now focused on sending its energy to the bulb. π
