Texas Tanner finished his 2026 NCAA season with a handful of some of the most impressive NCAA marks in history. 69.56m discus throw at Ramona and 78.87m hammer throw at Long Beach place him in rare air. However, an NCAA title eluded him during his time at the Air Force academy. Sunday’s tailwind at the USATF Outdoor National Championships didn’t prevent him from winning gold as a professional as he topped an impressive field of competitors and proved he didn’t need Ramona’s wind to throw far. Ben Smith threw 21.04m in round 3 of the men’s shot put at the 2026 NCAA Championships to secure the the title in his home circle at Oregon’s Hayward Field. The Redshirt Frosh capped an outdoor season in which he topped 20m in every competition by surpassing 21 meters for the first time to win NCAA gold. I of course was overjoyed, I’ve known Ben since he was in middle school. Ben shares insights into his first 2 seasons at Oregon and we retrace some of his journey building his his skills as a young thrower growing up in Wisconsin.
