One of the biggest things that speeds up any design project? Having the words to actually describe what you’re going for.

“I want it to look nice” doesn’t give a designer much to work with.

“I want it to feel warm, grounded, and a little earthy” does.

The more specific your vocabulary, the closer that first draft lands to what’s already in your head, which means fewer rounds of “not quite, try again” and a lot more “yes, exactly that.”

Recent projects have taken me from a photographer’s storytelling-first site, to a coach’s brand built around trust and connection, to an architecture firm that needed structure and sophistication baked into every pixel. Add in an event space designed to make people want to book it on sight, a soapery that needed its products to feel as good online as they smell in person, and a local movement community that needed a site as welcoming as the space itself, and that’s a pretty good snapshot of the range I get to work in.

Back in the early stages of opening Solstice Web Co., I said yes to almost everything. It was smart then, and I still think it’s wise to welcome allll the opportunities in the beginning of your career so you can get off the ground; free work and work that you aren’t super passionate about included. After a few years of that, I think it’s safe to say you’re experienced enough to learn not only your own design style but where you really contribute best, too.

I used to allow many extra revisions and agree to a larger scope of work post-contract (free of charge) all in the name of being easy to work with.

Looking back, I don’t think that made me easy to work with. Eh, maybe a bit! Moreso, I was just really afraid of disappointing clients. Starting a business as a tender-hearted 21 year old who wants everyone to be happy isn’t for the weak, ya’ll! But over time, it’s been an irreplaceable learning experience. And after 5 years of working for myself, I’m still in awe of how much entrepreneurship forces you to try, fail, refine, try again, celebrate the successes while you reflect on the failures, and ultimately continue to persevere.
This turning point in the way I operate wasn’t one big dramatic moment. It happened over years. Like a slow accumulation of feeling stretched thin and realizing the work I was putting out during that season wasn’t my best.

These days I ask myself a much simpler question before I commit to anything: is this actually a good fit, for both of us? Sometimes the answer’s no, and I listen to that now.
I still care just as deeply about the people I work with. I’ve just learned that caring and over-extending aren’t actually the same thing, and untangling those two was one of the better things I’ve done for this business.
