This is a devastating but powerful story, please take a read and consider how you an connect with our work of uplifting people of trans experience and see how you can speak out against legislative overreach and hurtful laws.

After May Pollard died on a late-January morning, a detective asked her parents a question: Had anyone wanted to hurt her?

“A lot of America,” her mother answered.

As a new ally, it’s your worst nightmare: Something you said or did hurt your LGBTQ+ loved one—and you genuinely didn’t mean to! Maybe you intended to say something nice and have no idea why it impacted them in that way.

➡️ Instead of getting defensive, try:
• Acknowledging (rather than minimizing) the impact.
• Remembering that a gentle correction is not a personal attack, but an opportunity for you to learn how to do better.
• Apologizing in a way that takes responsibility for the hurt that you caused.

We’re PFLAG proud to partner with our friends at American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and were honored to join their Human Rights Luncheon at the AFT Convention 2026: Fighting for a Better Life for All.

As the Trump administration continues its attacks on vulnerable communities, AFT and civil rights leaders stressed the importance of working-class people building solidarity together to create a better life for future generations.

“We got all that we need, and we got all that we have, and we are going to win this fight,” AFT Secretary-Treasurer Fedrick C. Ingram said. “We need to speak up and speak the truth about human rights, civil rights, immigrant rights, LGBTQIA and African American and Latino and Asian rights. They are all deserving of the same rights.”
