The sport of pickleball has seen a whirlwind of activity over the past week with several notable events and developments captivating the community. Here are the top five highlights:

Unexpected Loss for the Johns Brothers: In a surprising turn of events at the PPA Holly Hill, Ben and Collin Johns suffered an early defeat in the round of 16 to Jaume Martinez Vich and Wyatt Stone. This loss is particularly notable given the rarity with which the Johns brothers find themselves on the losing end, especially so early in a tournament.

Ben Johns Secures Singles Gold: Despite the earlier setback in doubles, Ben Johns continued his dominance in the singles category by winning the gold medal. His strategic use of two-hand backhand shots and a mix of tennis and pickleball tactics on serve and return points respectively showcased his adaptability and skill.

Mixed Doubles Victory for ALW and Ben: Anna Leigh Waters and Ben Johns effortlessly claimed the mixed doubles gold at PPA Holly Hill, reinforcing their status as an unbeatable pair in the current pickleball landscape.

Women’s Doubles Win for CP and ALW: The duo of Catherine Parenteau and Anna Leigh Waters continued their winning streak by securing another victory in women’s doubles. Their consistent performance raises questions about potential challengers who could disrupt their dominance.

Major League Pickleball Developments: The pickleball world is also buzzing with excitement over Major League Pickleball's strategic movements, including a full merger with the Carvana PPA Tour backed by a significant investment. This development aims to unify professional pickleball under a single banner, promising a more cohesive and expansive future for the sport.

Pickleball and Longevity: What the Mayo Clinic Study Says

Pickleball is a relatively new sport, but it has quickly become one of the most popular activities for seniors. The game is a combination of badminton, tennis, and table tennis, and it is played on a smaller court with a paddle and a plastic ball.

In a recent study published in the Mayo Clinic Proceedings, researchers found that playing racket sports, such as pickleball, tennis, and badminton, was associated with a longer life expectancy. The study looked at data from over 10,000 adults over the age of 65, and found that those who played racket sports had a life expectancy that was 6 to 9.7 years longer than those who did not play any sports.

The researchers believe that there are several reasons why racket sports may be linked to longevity. First, these sports are a good form of aerobic exercise, which can help to improve cardiovascular health. Second, racket sports require balance, coordination, and hand-eye coordination, all of which are important for maintaining cognitive function as we age. Third, racket sports are social activities, which can help to reduce loneliness and isolation, which are both risk factors for premature death.

Of course, the Mayo Clinic study is just one study, and more research is needed to confirm these findings. However, the study does provide some encouraging evidence that playing racket sports may be a way to help us live longer, healthier lives.

Pickleball Comes to Fenway Park
In an exciting development, Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox, announced it will host pickleball from July 13 to 16. The event will feature professional and amateur tournaments as well as open play for fans. This endeavor is a collaboration with Pickleball4America (Pickle4), a newly formed organization partnered with the US Open Pickleball Championships.
