Very excited that is upon us, and the community is making their way to Madison! I’ll be speaking Friday morning, providing a cartographic tour of Madison through the lens of OpenStreetMap data. The presentation is a preview of many of the maps prepared for my forthcoming “Madison in 50 Maps” book with !

A timely wrap up of one of my book maps, “Frank Lloyd Wright’s Built & Unbuilt Designs” in Madison! One of FLW’s most influential designs, the Unitarian Meeting House, is celebrating its 75th anniversary! had a great interview today with March Schweitzer, president of the Friends of the Meeting House, about the landmark and the events on deck to celebrate it this weekend.

While my map explores both his local masterpieces and the dozens of blueprints that never came to be, this weekend is all about celebrating one of his greatest built triumphs. Learn more about the events planned at unitarianmeetinghouse.org

Wrapping up some updates to my Street Name Origins map! This has quickly become one of my favorite spreads for the book.

When I first shared this for the , the suggestions poured in for other thematic street name clusters I’d missed. Since then, I’ve been busy expanding the data:

🌲 National Parks & Sites on the West Side (Yellowstone Dr, Acadia Dr, Everglade Dr to name a few)

🚀 Space theme on the Far East Side (Anyone live on Milky Way or Orion Trail?)

🍏 The Beatles—a small but legendary pocket of songs-turned-streets! 🎸

Not a cartographically complex map for the book, but certainly one to spark some debates! I’ve been still slowly collecting community data on how the public collectively defines the “sides” of Madison. For the book I’ve opted to use the designations set in the Generalized Future Land Use plan. How do these differ from your perspective on the core areas of Madison?

IYKYK. WIP map first drafted way back during the 2023 that I’m finally preparing for print. Trying to fit as many segment labels as I can… what else should I include (if there’s room!)?
