The IDF has demolished part of a school and kindergarten this morning in Shi‘b al-Batem, the West Bank, which served children from several communities across Masafer Yatta. The building is in Area C, which covers 60% of the West Bank, where Palestinians are effectively barred from building, even within their own villages. In Area C, Palestinians are obligated to obtain a construction permit from the IDF; with a “generous” approval rate of less than one percent. Since October 2023, attacks on the Palestinian education system have intensified. Israel has withheld the Palestinian Authority’s tax revenues for more than a year. As a result, teachers receive only a fraction of their salaries, and most schools operate only partially. Israeli soldiers were responsible for the death of a baby after an ambulance carrying a heavily bleeding pregnant woman was delayed at a military checkpoint, a Sky News report verifies. The report says the ambulance was stopped by Israeli soldiers who checked identification and ordered the engine to be switched off while the woman required urgent medical treatment. Due to the excessive hold up, medics were forced to deliver the baby inside the ambulance to save the mother's life, but the baby did not survive. Although the Israeli military denied the incident took place, Sky News reported that video from the ambulance crew and accounts from hospital officials and the doctor who treated the woman supported the account of what happened.

Between July 28 and August 8, communities in more than 20 cities around the world will gather to commemorate the first anniversary of the killing of Palestinian teacher, activist, and community leader Awdah Hathaleen. From San Antonio to Melbourne, and cities across Europe and Israel, mourners will participate in vigils, mourning tents, educational programs, and community gatherings honoring Hathaleen's life and renewing calls for justice for his village of Umm al-Khair and Palestinian communities across the occupied West Bank.
Following an ask from Awdah’s family, memorial events are calling for an end to the demolitions, a right to education for the children of Umm al Khair, and justice for Awdah.
“We in Umm al-Khair and the family of Awdah Hathaleen the martyr have been living the pain and sorrow of the loss of our beloved leader, activist, teacher and father who was murdered by the settler Yinon Levi. During the annual memorial we ask the international community and any person who is free and has a conscience: justice for Awdah, the right to education for the children in our village and lastly to put a stop to demolitions in our village.” - Khalil Hathaleen, Awdah’s older brother and village leader in Umm al-Khair
Hathaleen, a teacher and activist from the village of Umm al-Khair in Masafer Yatta (South Hebron Hills) of the occupied West Bank, was shot and killed on July 28, 2025 while filming an excavator destroying trees in his village. A father of three young children, he was 31. His death drew widespread international condemnation amid ongoing concerns about escalating violence against Palestinian communities in the Occupied Territories.
