It was on this date in 1989 when Secretariat left this earth. The news reverberated across the sports world and beyond, including as the top story in USA Today.

In a special tribute published a few days later in the New York Times, owner Penny Chenery shared some favorite recollections of her charismatic champion, including how Big Red always was aware of his surroundings. Upon his retirement to stud at Claiborne Farm, “he became as friendly as an old puppy dog” -- even letting families pose babies on his withers. “Secretariat seemed to realize his role then was to be a folk hero. His demeanor was that of a champion in whatever he was asked to do,” Chenery remembered. “He was not only a champion race horse, but a cherished friend.”
