Barred owls are just one of the 7 different species of owls that live in Georgia, although only 4 live here year-round.

Barred owls are skilled fliers, moving routine pathways through forests to soar silently in search of prey.

Listen to the quietness of the owl in this video as it barely makes a sound while landing on the ground and then taking off soon afterwards.

Barred owls’ length ranges from 18 to 25 inches, and their wingspan can be as large as 24 inches. Barred owls like to live in mature forests close to swamps and are especially common in south Georgia, though they are often heard and seen in Middle Georgia as well.

These types of owls mostly spends its time during the daylight tucked into dense tree foliage, usually 16 feet or higher above the ground.

Barred owls like to live in mature forests close to swamps and are especially common in south Georgia, though they are often heard and seen in Middle Georgia as well.

Their vocalizations are often loud and emphatic, sometimes sounding like eight accented hoots (ok-ok-ok-ok ok-ok-buhooh) or two hoots with a downward pitch at the end (some hear “who cooks for you, who cooks for you). Barred owl earned its nickname, Old Eight-Hooter, from the first type of call.

Sometimes barred owls sound more strange and foreboding, and their calls can “vary into cackles, hoots, caws and gurgles, at times described as ‘sudden demonic laughter’, ‘cat-like screams’ and ‘prolonged outbursts of cackling,” according to Wikipedia.

The barred owl’s mating season is from February to April, which is a good time to listen out for this unique bird’s call.

The Eastern Screech Owl, Great Horned Owl, and Barn Owl are some of the other owls that can often be found in a variety of habitats throughout our state.

Have you ever wanted to see Earth the way only about 600 humans ever have?

Space Explorers: THE INFINITE can help you do that, and it is now open at Pullman Yards in Atlanta. This Emmy Award-winning, immersive VR experience inspired by NASA missions takes you aboard the International Space Station for a roughly 55-minute journey. You’ll explore 360-degree cinematic footage filmed inside and outside the ISS, walk alongside real astronauts, witness breathtaking views of Earth, and experience a simulated spacewalk.

I walked away from the experience feeling inspired and having a greater appreciation for the amazing things humans can do if we work together without letting our differing beliefs cause us to fight and argue endlessly.

THE INFINITE is only in Atlanta through August 2026. Tickets start at +$24+ for children (ages 8+) and $34+ for adults.
