MOVE OVER LAW – GEORGIA CODE 40-6-16
The Lyons Police Department is actively enforcing Georgia’s Move Over Law to ensure the safety of emergency personnel, tow operators, and road crews working on or near the roadway.
Here’s what the law says and what drivers must do:
A. When approaching a stationary authorized emergency vehicle (such as police, fire, EMS) that is displaying flashing yellow, amber, white, red, or blue lights:
Change lanes away from the emergency vehicle if it is safe and legal to do so, creating space between your vehicle and the emergency scene.
If you cannot safely change lanes, you must slow down below the posted speed limit to a speed that is safe for the current road and traffic conditions and be prepared to stop if necessary.
B. When approaching a stationary tow truck, recovery vehicle, or highway maintenance vehicle displaying flashing yellow, amber, or red lights:
Again, change lanes away from the vehicle if safety and traffic conditions allow.
If a lane change is not possible or safe, reduce your speed to a reasonable and proper speed for the situation slower than the posted speed limit and remain alert.
C. Penalties:
Failure to follow the Move Over Law can result in a fine of up to $500. More importantly, violations can endanger the lives of those working on our roadways.
Why It Matters:
This law exists to protect the lives of those who serve and assist others on the roadside. Every year, emergency responders and service workers are injured or killed simply because drivers fail to move over or slow down.
Lyons Police Department is committed to keeping our roadways safe for both motorists and the professionals who serve them.
Please follow the law: Move over. Slow down. Save lives.
We want to let everyone know that the small pack of dogs that had been roaming the area and reportedly attacking cats has been safely picked up and is now in the care of the Lyons Animal Shelter.
Thanks to the quick response from local animal control and tips from concerned residents, the dogs are now off the streets and in a safe, secure environment. They’re currently being evaluated and cared for as we determine the best next steps.
We know this situation caused concern especially for local pet owners and we hope this update brings peace of mind.
We're always happy to do our part in keeping both our four-legged friends and two-legged neighbors safe.
