It’s a long read, but I wanted to take a moment to talk about Kane, the namesake of our rescue. For those that don’t know his story, and the reason that I started the rescue. Unfortunately, his story is not unlike thousands of other abandoned dogs.
I found a post for a dog at the Franklin County shelter who was due to be euthanized in a couple days, back in September of 2020. I talked it over with my better half, and we decided to start fostering. I reached out to the advocates who posted him, so that I could try to find a rescue. I found a rescue to pull him on the day he was to be euthanized at 5:00pm. I was helping my daughter move into an apartment, when I received the phone call that a rescue was found. I dropped everything, apologized to my daughter & drove two & a half hours to pick him up. When I got there they put me in a tiny room & I waited for them to bring him in. He walked in, took a couple of treats from me then he nuzzled me with his snoot.🙂 I took him for a walk in the the play yard, and really just could not understand why this dog was set to be euthanized. I remember them asking me if I wanted to take him, which struck me as such an odd question, given that if I did not take him he would be dead once I left. The drive home was uneventful. When I reached my house, I slowly introduced him to Joe, and after an initial grumble, Kane decided that Joe was an okay guy.
We did a little digging and found out that he had been in & out of that shelter multiple times since he was about one year old, and his name used to be King.
Fast forward to today. Has it always been easy…NO! Have I always absolutely adored him?…YES! Would I ever give up on him?…NEVER!
I understand that he will never be a social boy, and I always have to be vigilant when I take him on walks. He has come a long way, but will always be reactive towards other dogs and humans, other than Joe and I. We room & rotate him & our other two dogs. Mostly because of Klaus(our mini dachshund who only has love for his sister, Maisy)
I guess the point is, every single dog has quirks. I have never understood why, once you make a commitment to give your dog a long, healthy, happy life, how could you ever just abandon them?? If you have the integrity & compassion, and are willing to make a commitment, foster or adopt! Shelters and rescues, including ours, are absolutely drowning.

We are asking you all to donate just $5 on this five dollar Friday. It might mean a cup of coffee to you, but it means the world to us & the pups in our care! If everyone following our page donates just $5, we would be able to fund Pumbaa’s & Prince’s 30 day board & train sessions. Prince headed down to our trainer on May 30th, and Pumbaa is heading down there on June 7th. Plus we would be able to pay off the remaining vet bills that we have & continue to pull more dogs! You can donate through Facebook or go to our website to see other ways to donate: https://kanesmission.org/donate
