Everybody’s on this ’80s trend, so of course I thought… why not step it up a notch? 😂

Instead of just seeing what I would’ve looked like in the ’80s, I wanted to see what I would’ve looked like as a REALTOR® selling Baltimore real estate in the 1980s.

Technically, that would mean I probably needed to be born sometime in the late ’60s, but we’re not going to let a little thing like math ruin this. 😂

And YES—I’m pretty sure I would’ve been cruising around Baltimore in the same Trans Am Firebird my mom had, giant Firebird on the hood and all. 🔥 Big hair, brick phone, RE/MAX sign in the trunk, running from listing appointments to showings.

Same hustle. Different decade.

But this trend actually made me think about something much bigger.

How many times have you heard someone say, “If I knew then what I know now…”?

Because if I knew in the 1980s what I know about real estate today, I wouldn’t have just been selling Baltimore—I would have been BUYING Baltimore.

Canton. Federal Hill. Locust Point. Rowhomes that people overlooked. Rental properties. Multifamily. Pieces of land in the path of development. Properties near the waterfront before everyone wanted to live near the waterfront.

Baltimore has gone through tremendous changes over the last several decades, and hindsight makes the opportunities look obvious. But that’s the thing about real estate: the opportunity usually doesn’t look obvious until AFTER everybody wishes they had bought it.

And here’s something else to think about when you hear people today say, “I’m waiting for interest rates to come down.”

In 1980, mortgage rates averaged around 16%. In 1981, they averaged around 18% and actually reached a record 18.63%.

Today? Freddie Mac’s latest published weekly average for a 30-year fixed mortgage is 6.71% as of September 3, 2026.

Of course, there’s another side to that story: homes cost considerably more today. And incomes have changed too. According to the census bureau in 1980, the median household earned just $17,710 a year. By 2025, the latest data put median household income at $83,730.

So I’m not going to give you the cliché REALTOR® line that “NOW IS ALWAYS THE BEST TIME TO BUY!!!” because that simply isn’t true for every person.

The right time to buy real estate is when it is right for YOU—when the payment makes sense, your finances are ready, you plan to stay long enough for ownership to make sense, and the property fits your goals.

But if all those things are true and the only thing keeping you on the fence is waiting for the “perfect market,” remember: people have been waiting for the perfect market for decades.

Some waited for rates to fall.
Some waited for prices to fall.
Some waited for more inventory.
Some waited because they thought the neighborhood wasn’t worth investing in yet.

And somewhere along the way, somebody else bought the house.

You can’t go back and buy Baltimore real estate at 1980s prices—but you can make decisions today that 20 or 30 years from now might have you saying, “I’m REALLY glad I did that.”
