🦠 A Simple Reason Why Hands-Off Care Matters

Many people are surprised to learn that some illnesses that are very common and relatively harmless in humans can be extremely serious for lemurs.

One important example is herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) — the virus commonly associated with cold sores.

Recent veterinary research documented four lemurs that became infected with human HSV-1. The virus caused severe neurological illness, including inflammation of the brain and seizures, and sadly, all four animals died.

One of the lemurs had previously participated in an interactive lemur yoga program. Researchers could not determine exactly when or how that animal became infected, but the cases highlight something that is very important in primate care: close contact between humans and lemurs can carry risks that aren’t always obvious.

People can carry and shed HSV-1 without having a visible cold sore or realizing they may be contagious.

🐒 This is one of the reasons Ringtail Ranch practices hands-off care with our lemurs.

We want people to experience how amazing these animals are — to watch them interact with their troop, learn their personalities, see their natural behaviors and understand why they deserve our protection.

We simply believe those experiences don’t have to involve touching.

Our hands-off approach is one more layer of protection for the animals entrusted to our care and helps reduce the possibility of transmitting human illnesses to them.

Sometimes protecting the animals we love means enjoying them with a little space between us. ❤️🐒
