☀️ Heat Advisory Update ☀️
With temperatures in Lubbock expected to reach as high as 108 degrees today, extreme heat can quickly become dangerous for our friends experiencing homelessness — especially those living outside with little or no access to shade, air conditioning, cold water, restrooms, or a safe place to cool down.
Open Door’s Community Center will be open today from 7:30 AM–5:00 PM for anyone seeking refuge from the heat.
We are also asking the community to help us meet urgent needs by donating:
• Bottled water
• Sunscreen
• Bug spray
• ChapStick
Donations can be dropped off at 1918 13th St., Lubbock, TX 79401.
Financial gifts can also be made through our website to support the Community Center and the daily care, connection, and needed items provided to our friends.
Thank you for helping us keep our neighbors safe during this dangerous heat. Please share to help spread the word.

When familiar faces leave and new faces replace them, and when our world feels shaky and unpredictable, it is easy for us to get scared, to get grumpy, and to wish we could just run back to the familiar,
Dios está con nosotros aquí. (God is with us here.)
When the sky opens up and it won't stop pouring down, and it feels completely impossible to stay dry. When clothes are soaked through, blankets are ruined, and effort goes to protecting bags from the water,
Dios está con nosotros aquí.
When our stomachs are filled by a good meal but our bodies are drained from the hustle of the streets, when we know our biggest battle today isn't finding a plate of food to eat, but simply finding a place to be,
Dios está con nosotros aquí.
God does not wait for us to have a perfect setup, or a dry place to live before showing up to love us. Right here in the middle of the wet concrete, the loud rooms, and the new faces, the Creator of the universe camps out right next to us.
Dios está con nosotros aquí.

As Mental Health Awareness Month comes to a close, we wanted to hand the microphone to the people who know this journey best.
Our staff in Permanent Supportive Housing shared some of the ways they care for their mental health—through faith, music, connection, hobbies, movement, rest, and the small daily practices that help them keep moving forward.
Mental health looks different for everyone, and healing isn’t one-size-fits-all. We are grateful to walk alongside individuals as they build stability, discover what works for them, and create lives filled with hope and purpose.
What is one thing you do to support your own mental health? 💚

Some call it case management. Mandy calls it family. From the time she was young, Mandy knew she wanted to become a social worker. Her path wasn’t simple. She became a mom at 19, returned to school, kept going, and never lost sight of the place her heart kept pulling her toward: Open Door. Then, on a freezing January morning, she walked in for her first day as an intern—and knew almost instantly: *this is where I’m meant to be.*
Today, Mandy serves as a Permanent Supportive Housing Case Manager, walking alongside 21 of our friends with steady, compassionate, wrap-around support. That can look like helping someone stay housed, get to a medical appointment, find food, access clothing, or take the next brave step toward stability.
But Mandy’s work is never just a checklist.
It looks like dropping everything during a meeting to dance in the pouring rain with a friend who rarely opens up.
It looks like sitting beside someone on a bench, celebrating the moment they sign an important document for the first time in years.
It looks like showing up again and again until someone begins to believe they are worthy of being seen, known, and loved.
And the beautiful part? That love comes right back.
Our friends check in on Mandy. They save snacks and coloring books from their own food boxes for her daughter, Sailor. They remind us that community is not “us helping them.” It is all of us belonging to one another. Mandy’s story is the Open Door mission in motion: people walking together, healing together, and building a community where no one has to face life alone.
When you give, serve, pray, or show up—you become part of stories like this.
You help make home, hope, and family possible. You make living, thriving, and belonging possible.

What does street outreach really mean? For us, it means meeting people exactly where they are—building relationships and bringing support directly to our unhoused neighbors on the streets, in camps, and throughout the community. It’s work rooted in deep respect and partnership, recognizing that so many people are already doing the heavy lifting to move their lives forward. Often, our role is simply to help clear the complex obstacles blocking their path. 🤝
For example, during a regular outreach drive around Lubbock, our Street Outreach Worker met a neighbor who was working hard every day with a steady income. Despite his hard work, he was trapped in the exhausting, expensive cycle of living motel-to-motel near his job. The sheer complexity of rental applications and proving income can feel like an insurmountable barrier when you are navigating it all alone. He didn’t need us to pave the way from scratch; he just needed a supportive community to stand with him, help navigate the red tape, and show him that affordable housing near his work was actually within his reach.
Today, he is safely settled into an apartment close to his workplace. 🔑✨🏠
The solution to homelessness is a home. When we treat people with the dignity they deserve and remove the barriers in their way, we build a community where everyone can truly live, thrive, and belong. 💙
