Amina's mother Florence was thrilled when her daughter, though born with a lip, was otherwise healthy. Amina was a happy baby, and when she was one month old Florence took her to the hospital to discuss surgical treatment for her cleft condition.

Although Florence was told that Amina was too young for surgery at the time, it was in that hospital Florence saw the poster for Operation Smile Malawi. She called the contact number and learned that there was a surgical program in Zomba. Unfortunately, when Florence brought Amina to the program they faced another setback; Amina's hemoglobin level was too low to safely receive surgery.

Operation Smile Malawi provided Amina with iron supplements and helped Florence ensure that her daughter would be healthy enough for surgery at the next surgical program. Their efforts were a success, and one year later Amina was able to receive surgery.

After Amina's surgery, Florence, her husband Dickson, the rest of their family and their entire community joyfully welcomed Amina home.

Long before Olu Jacobs became one of the most celebrated faces of Nollywood, the legendary Nigerian actor had already taken his talent to international screens.

With a career spanning more than five decades, Jacobs built an impressive body of work across British theatre and television, international cinema and eventually Nigeria’s growing film industry. Trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London, he became known for his commanding presence, distinctive voice and versatility.

Interestingly, Jacobs appeared alongside internationally recognised actors and filmmakers in several major productions during the late 1970s and 1980s.

Ashanti — 1979

One of Jacobs’ earliest international film appearances came in Ashanti, a 1979 adventure film directed by Richard Fleischer.

Jacobs played Commissioner Batak, appearing alongside international stars including Michael Caine and Omar Sharif. The film marked an important early chapter in his international screen career.

The Dogs of War — 1980

In 1980, Jacobs featured in The Dogs of War, a war thriller directed by John Irvin and starring Christopher Walken and Tom Berenger.

Jacobs played an Immigration/Customs Officer in the film, which was based on Frederick Forsyth’s novel. His appearance placed him in a major international production alongside some of the era’s notable actors.

Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend — 1985

Five years later, Jacobs appeared in Disney’s Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend.

He portrayed Colonel Nsogbu in the family adventure film, sharing the screen with actors including William Katt and Sean Young. The film became another significant international credit in his filmography.

Pirates — 1986

Perhaps one of the most interesting entries in Jacobs’ international film career was Pirates, the 1986 adventure-comedy directed by acclaimed filmmaker Roman Polanski.

Jacobs played Boomako, appearing alongside Hollywood veteran Walter Matthau. The film further demonstrated that his acting career had already crossed international borders before the rise of modern Nollywood.

From International Cinema to Nollywood

After his international work, Jacobs returned to Nigeria around 1990 and became deeply involved in the country’s emerging television and film industry.

He took on the role of Inspector Best Idafa in the NTA detective series The Third Eye and subsequently became one of the most recognisable actors of the Nigerian film industry.

From Ashanti to The Dogs of War, Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend and Pirates, Olu Jacobs had already left his mark on international cinema before becoming a defining figure in Nollywood.

His journey was not simply from Nollywood to the world. He had already walked onto the international stage — and later returned home to become one of the most influential figures in Nigerian cinema.

Veteran Nollywood Actor Olu Jacobs D-ies At 84

Nigerian cinema is mourning the loss of veteran actor Olu Jacobs, who has d-ied at the age of 84.

His wife, actress Joke Silva, announced his passing, bringing an end to the career of one of Nollywood’s most recognisable veteran performers.

For decades, Jacobs built a reputation for powerful performances and a commanding presence on screen, earning admiration from audiences across Nigeria and beyond.

News of his passing has triggered tributes from colleagues, fans and members of the African entertainment industry, many remembering his lasting contribution to Nollywood.
