This window art was painted by no other than the amazing Kei . Thanks, bestie! Context below:
Louhi is the witch queen of the far North. She rules Pohjola, a land beyond forests and seas where winter never really ends. Sheβs a central figure in the Finnish epic Kalevala.
Louhi is tied to wind, frost, snow, disease, animals, as well as the movement of the sun and moon. She rules from the Iron Mountain, an ancient idea of the worldβs center which is said to hold up the sky.
In the myths, Louhi steals and hides the sun and the moon. This window shows the moment where the moon was pulled from the sky leaving the world in darkness for a season.
This Information has been adapted from text (The Kalevala, by John Martin Crawford 1888) found on sacred-texts.com https://sacred-texts.com/neu/kveng/kvrune47.htm as well the Finnish Mythology blog (finnmyth.wordpress.com), which links Tiina Porthan, a Finnish author. Her book on women in Finnish mythology is called Women of Might and Magic: Witch Queens, Deities of Death and Nature Goddesses in Finnish Mythology. It's illustrated by Tero Porthan.
