A local legend and hero in his own right, Fred Stoner's impact on the Louisville community was honored today with the unveiling of Fred T. Stoner Way.
During his amateur years, a young Muhammad Ali split his training between Joe Martin and Fred Stoner, who taught him to shuffle and helped shape the style that would make him a champion. Ali later said:
"...he was the man that taught me to box. He was a great trainer and a gentleman. An honest man, a clean, hard-working, God-fearing man, and he helped the boys of Louisville. We'll really miss him."
The Muhammad Ali Center was honored to join today's celebration of Stoner's legacy. As his granddaughter, Shavonda Stoner, said, "We always pay attention to the fruit, but never the root."
Today, Louisville honored one of the roots of Ali's story and a man whose impact continues to be felt throughout the community.
Celebrate Juneteenth through a program honoring freedom, reflection, and collective healing alongside free admission to the Ali Center.
