Join us for a sunset rooftop meditation led by Fahad Siadat on 𝕊𝕦𝕟𝕕𝕒𝕪, 𝔸𝕡𝕣𝕚𝕝 𝟙𝟚 𝕒𝕥 𝟟𝕡𝕞, presented as part of the public programming for Roksana Pirouzmand’s exhibition, everything was once something else (the land was the sea, the sea was the land).

Taking place atop the Bendix Building, this guided meditation invites participants to attune to the subtle vibrations within Pirouzmand’s work. Spanning JOAN and OXY ARTS, the exhibition brings together sculptural forms activated through sound and resonance, where small movements ripple across objects and spaces. This meditation extends that field, offering a collective moment to feel and embody these transmissions.

Bring a jacket and wear comfortable clothing, the rooftop can get cool in the evening. Light refreshments will be provided.

Pirouzmand’s inquiry into transformation, interconnectedness, and impermanence unfolds through clay and metal—materials born of the earth and shaped by fire. Absorbent and porous, resonant and reverberant, they become conduits for thinking about cause and effect, fragility and force, and the movement of energy between bodies, materials, and environments.

Presented across JOAN and OXY ARTS, the exhibition brings together new sculptural works linked through vibration and sound. Subtle, often imperceptible movements activate chains of resonance that travel across objects and sites, animating the space through invisible kineticism.

We’re grateful to everyone who joined Los Angeles Against the Mountains at the Santa Fe Dam Recreational Area.

Over the course of the three-mile walk, we paused at four sites where Hunter Baoengstrum shared context on the history and present-day uses of the dam, while Jamil Baldwin, Theo Meranze, Michael Ned Holte, and Yasaman Sheri read from their own work alongside selected texts.

JOAN is hiring a Getty Marrow Curatorial Intern for Summer 2026!

The Summer Intern will work closely with JOAN’s team full-time for 10 weeks (June–August 2026) through the Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internship Program.

The intern will assist with the research, conceptualization, and production of a newly commissioned solo exhibition opening in Fall 2026, while gaining hands-on experience and actively contributing to exhibition and project development, as well as public programming within a small nonprofit arts organization.
Applications are due April 10, 2026. Interviews will take place during the week of April 20, and final decisions will be announced by April 30.

Los Angeles Against the Mountains is a three-mile walking tour of the Santa Fe Dam led by 𝗛𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗕𝗮𝗼𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗺, founder and general manager of .la. Along the trail, Baoengstrum will discuss how the forces of erosion bend space across Southern California through the violent beauty of the San Gabriel Mountains.

The walk will include three different stops, where writers 𝗝𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹 𝗚 𝗕𝗮𝗹𝗱𝘄𝗶𝗻, 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗲𝗹 𝗡𝗲𝗱 𝗛𝗼𝗹𝘁𝗲, 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗼 𝗠𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘇𝗲, and 𝗟𝗮𝗿𝗮 𝗦𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗮𝗻 will read from their own work as well as from texts related to the exhibition’s themes, including the Iranian diaspora, the erosion of landscape, and the connection between distant places through technology.

We will meet at the Santa Fe Dam Recreational Area (34.113278, -117.955820) at 1:00pm and begin walking at 1:30pm. Please bring comfortable walking shoes and sun protection. Light snacks and hydration will be provided at the beginning of the inspection.

Away From Desk brings together programming by Five Churches, The Fulcrum, Gene’s Dispensary, Leroy’s, and O-Town House, with additional contributions by Poetic Research Bureau and others. Music and performances will unfold throughout the evening.

For this special presentation, JOAN will take over the intimate 20-seat cinema to stage an extended program on loop throughout the run. We’ve invited two artists whose work we’ve been thinking about for some time—please join us there and say hello.

Beside Itself: Constantinos Hadzinikolaou & Stanya Kahn

JOAN presents a looping film program featuring works by Constantinos Hadzinikolaou and Stanya Kahn. Bringing together two distinct yet resonant practices, this presentation considers the diaristic as political form—where confession slips into critique and language becomes a site of friction. Here, text operates as a parallel image: subtitles drift from speech, translation fractures meaning, and words move alongside the visual field, generating friction rather than definition.

Working through slowness, repetition, and delay, the artists engage duration as a subtle form of holding ground. Fragments, residues, and eroded gestures replace narrative climax. Memory appears as sediment; voice becomes unstable; the image refuses to resolve. What remains is trace: an afterimage shaped as much by what is withheld as by what is shown.
