The last Saturday in September is .

The day reminds us precious memories are irreplaceable. Every day people are the stuff of history. The daily incidents and people that seem mundane in the present become the window into how people felt, thought, and acted in the past. Understanding people of the past lends insights to ourselves today. Think of saving those photos as your obligation to the future.

Museum designers and curators search and long and hard for photos showing the every day experience. The National Museum of American Jewish History (Philadelphia) incorporates large-scale photos into exhibits to individualize history. Blowing up a snapshot to wall size isn't easy. Ask any graphics project manager. The result is worth the effort.

So save those photos! But when you do, make sure you're using your phone's highest DPI setting.

Do you have a favorite museum souvenir? We go for the mugs every time.

On the last Sunday in September, Gold Star Mother’s and Family Day honors the mothers, fathers, and families of fallen military service members. Also known as National Gold Star Mother’s Day, the day serves as a reminder of the losses suffered by military families. A gold star symbolizes a family member who died in the line of duty while serving the United States Armed Forces.

Since World War I, the observance has provided a way to recognize and honor those who have lost a son or daughter who served our country in the United States Armed Forces.

In the United States, the third Friday in September honors National POW/MIA Recognition Day.

Each year since 1989, a presidential proclamation brings the nation together to remember and honor the members of the Armed Forces who remain missing in action or are prisoners of war. The day serves as a call to action, reminding the nation to rededicate our efforts. We’re responsible for bringing our patriots home and for caring for our military families awaiting word of their loved ones. Many of our clients are military museums. We support them on this day of remembrance.

National Day of the Cowboy on the fourth Saturday in July recognizes the stoic, hardworking symbol of the American West.

Western museums have a lot of cowboy and cowgirl history. The Fort Worth Museum of History and Science had a nifty, color changing steer that helped to explain the importance of cattle to Texas. Get along little doggie.

The era of the cowboy began after the Civil War in the heart of Texas. Cattle were herded long before this time, but in Texas, they grew wild and unchecked. As the country expanded, the demand for beef in the northern territories and states increased. With nearly 5 million head of cattle, cowboys moved the herds on long drives to where the profits were.

Congratulations to one of our favorite museums. A wonderful and deserving institution.

The Tennessee State Museum is honored to be a recipient of the 2022 Southeastern Museums Conference-SEMC Silver Award in the exhibitions category for our current exhibition, "Painting the Smokies: Art, Community, and the Making of a National Park." The SEMC Exhibition Competition showcases the best in our profession and provides benchmarks for regional exhibition efforts in southeastern museums.

“We have the highest regard for the work of the Southeastern Museums Conference and for the many museum colleagues throughout the region who join us as members,” said Ashley Howell, executive director, Tennessee State Museum. “The Great Smoky Mountains is an area that has been well travelled in the last century. We saw an opportunity to explore the subject of the park’s creation, through art and artifacts from within our collection, to tell an expansive story of the region. To be honored by a panel of peers for this exhibition is a great honor and team accomplishment.”

Make plans to see the award-winning exhibition, on display through January 15, 2023. Learn more:
