Firmware Hacking: Is That Network Card a Potential Threat?

A single computer is made up of a variety of components like network cards, trackpads, and webcams to name a few. Computer networks feature a huge variety of diverse hardware, software, and peripherals sourced from a mishmash of third parties. These components come with their own chips and code and manage to work together.

However, there’s a dark underside lurking within. Eclypsium researchers discovered that many of these components have firmware that lacks cryptographic verification and can be updated with unsigned code. Imagine a hacker being able to rewrite the code powering your hardware — all without a security check.
