VICTORIA FREEMAN: A LOCAL CIVIL RIGHTS PIONEER
Many Americans learn about school integration through stories from the South, but Longview has its own civil rights pioneer.
In 1924, Victoria Freeman challenged Longview's segregated school system after discovering Black children were expected to attend a separate school. She insisted her children receive the same education as every other child in town and successfully enrolled them in Longview's public schools.
A nurse, midwife, and community advocate, Freeman spent decades helping families and improving life in her neighborhood. Her work helped break barriers and create opportunities for future generations.
Today, Victoria Freeman Park honors her legacy.
