Calm Down Skills or Emotional Regulation is a difficult thing for some children (and adults) to master. Practice some of these things when your child is calm to help teach their brains and bodies new ways to regulate!
1. Deep Breathing:
- Imagine you are wind carrying a butterfly through the air. Breath in and out as slowly as you can to ensure your butterfly arrives home safely.
2. Muscle Relaxation:
- Pretend you are squeezing a whole lemon in your left hand. Squeeze it hard! Try to squeeze all the juice out. Feel the tightness in your hand and arm as you squeeze. Now drop the lemon and relax. See how much better your hand and arm feel when they are relaxed. Repeat with other hand.

3. Alone time
- Time alone in a safe area to calm down with stuffed animals/books/ or other favorite things.
4. Snack or drink of water
- Offering a snack or drink of water can help regulate emotions!

π’fun fact: No one is born knowing how to manage their emotions. WHAT?!
So what does this mean ?! π€·πΌββοΈ
Sometimes kids can pick up social-emotional skills by seeing them in action, like adults modeling how to use these skills, But most often, kids need explicit instruction to understand and practice these skills.
For instance, kids who struggle with executive functioning skills might have trouble paying attention, regulating emotions, or staying quiet in class. Teachers and Parents can demonstrate strategies that help children develop these skills.

PLANNED IGNORING helps your child learn to behave the way you prefer because they receive no attention for inappropriate behavior - while getting positive attention from you for the behavior you want to see more of! π‘β¨ππΌ
