Texas Racial Profiling laws in the George Floyd era. 02/14/2021

Texas has had a law prohibiting racial profiling by police for twenty years, and in my personal and professional opinion, agencies have done well in their efforts to hold themselves accountable to the citizens they serve in stopping the tactic of racial profiling. Having said that, there is one area that many, or most, agencies have been deficient at, not in the prohibition of racial profiling, but in their reporting their traffic contacts to the State....

“Normal is an illusion. What is normal for the spider is chaos to the fly” Police feel, like everyone else 08/16/2020

The title is from Charles Addams, creator of the Addams Family cartons that began in 1938, and spoken by Morticia Addams. It’s profound I think. As a police officer, I have hundreds of real life stories that fall under the chaos theme, but they are not something most are too terrible to read about here, yet all are from the “normal” life of a police officer. Portland riots continue after Feds follow though with agreed pull-out 08/11/2020

Photo: breitbart news Federal Agents that had been assigned to protect the Federal Courthouse in Portland handed over protection duties to Oregon State Police on August 8th in a move to ease tension between the state and the US Department of Justice. The USDOJ and Oregon officials made a deal to remove the agents, after local and state administrators made the agreement to send in State Troopers to take the place of the Agents; this was done because state and local administration felt that the presence of the Federal Agents were making matters in the City worse, and their stepping down would ease tensions amongst protesters. A word of encouragement to my Brothers and Sisters in Blue during these trying times 08/08/2020

People are burning police cars, burning police buildings, throwing just about anything they can at police; they burn neighborhood stores, deface them, loot them, in the name of “social justice”. For 32 plus years, I have worked as a police officer, and for 32 years, I have felt like I make a difference every day. I think back to a sermon, from when I was a young man, that revolved around doing your part in life to make a difference, and I had an opportunity a couple of years back to relay a part of the sentiment to a graduating class at the East Texas Police Academy. Recovering Latent Fingerprints – How Police Search For Fingerprints at a Crime Scene. 08/02/2020

A very simple definition of a fingerprint impression is any impression of, or left by, the friction ridge skin of a finger or thumb. Friction ridges are the ridges and furrows that are on the pads of the fingers and thumbs. They are there to provide grip, hence the name friction ridges. Almost everyone has fingerprints; they are formed while in the womb, and they are permanent, (short of scaring or mutilation to the skin), and they are unique to the individual. [ 1,722 more word ]

Seattle and Minneapolis both meet hurdles in the race to defund their police departments – although Minneapolis still eyes a complete disbanding of theirs 07/30/2020

Seattle, Washington’s plan to defund their police department by 50%, hit some snags this week, as hundreds of residents spoke up against the defunding push. Hundreds of concerned citizens brought their positions to the city council budget meeting on Wednesday in an effort to stop the proposed the PD budget cut the council was vying for. Fox Q13 reported that one member of the public reportedly told the council, “Defunding the police is a radical experiment that will hurt the vulnerable.” A 50% cut in the budget would result in a huge cut in officer positions, something many citizens are seeing as a very bad idea. Solomon U.S. Courthouse was done without a permit, and is this illegal. As Portland officials find it ok to burn Federal buildings, and throw rocks at Federal Agents, they certainly draw the line at putting up a fence that hinders the rioters right to riot. Latent Fingerprints on Human Skin 07/25/2020

Recovering fingerprints from human skin was all but unheard of when I started working in the late 1980’s, however, recent attempts have found that obtaining viable fingerprints in real world situations shows some success, albeit extremely limited. Victims of homicide are often touched or moved by their killers; knowing this, but being powerless to obtain usable fingerprints from the victim is frustrating to say the least. [ 712 more words ]
