Hello world! It’s true that I’m finally back at work full time after my major surgery in the beginning of the year. So happy to be back taking care of my client’s horses and getting back in the swing of things. Stay tuned for more frequent posting! 🙂

Some amazing organizations continuing to help me out after all my medical problems at the end of last year/beginning of this year. 🤍 mark your calender for June 6th!

I also want to state for the record that I don’t use AI for any of my posts, or Facebook at all. I just like using the • because it breaks what I write into neat little paragraphs. 🙂 everything I write is just coming from my busy brain!

It’s a bit of a rough time of year for hooves. In the morning the grass is super wet and dewy, and by the afternoon it’s HOT HOT HOT. This means the hoof is expanding in the morning and soaking up moisture, then contracting by mid-day and drying out.

In my last post, I showed WMR Calico Breeze with a new shoe I wanted to try, that is only attached using EasyCare super-glue. I snapped this picture yesterday showing a very good seal around the cuffs that are attached to the hoof. It’s good to see no corners coming up due to the contracting/expanding! I’m very pleased with the Stelth cuffs from EasyCare Inc. Protective Hoofwear. Love thier products!

Breeze is a 16yr old Mustang from the Calico Mountain HMA. Hence WMR Calico Breeze being her show name. The second picture of her was taken while she was in the holding pens after being rounded-up. The third picture is of Breeze several years ago doing an in-hand competition. Notice the very different coat color! In the winter she gets a lot of black hair, and in the summer she sheds out to a gorgeous dapple buckskin. Technically she is a Sooty Buckskin!

I hope everyone has a great weekend!

WMR Breeze the tester is back in action! I wanted to try out the EasyCare Inc. Protective Hoofwear Stealth shoes, using only EasyCare super glue to adhere them to the hoof. I tried to dye them grey but I got this sea blue instead. 😅 needless to say, Breeze got many treats for being a good girl! We will see how long the super glue holds. I’m skeptical since I’ve never used this method myself, but many hoofcare providers have shoes that stay on full cycles just with the superglue. We love a good experiment!

I don’t do 🐴👟 often as I try to keep my clients barefoot if at all possible. Sometimes horses need shoes for pathology reasons or to keep up as performance horses. I’m an EasyCare Inc. Protective Hoofwear Fan and so that’s what I use. I’ve found that some models absorb dye super well while others are more muted tones. For this horse today, this is his second cycle after a lifetime in metal shoes so the angles are still a bit funky. We pulled his hind shoes and so far he’s responding well. I’m always happy to bring new technology of composite glue-ons to my horses. I’m even happier to have colorful pretty shoes!

I hate to break it to you…. But your donkey actually needs their feet trimmed on a schedule. This sweet girl has been on a scheduale every 6 weeks with me for the past 2 years. I get calls almost daily from owners needing their donkeys feet done, but they are feral. For my safety I need the donkeys I trim to be tame meaning: able to be haltered and able to pick up all 4 feet without trying to kick your head off. If they can’t do those things, I’m just not the right farrier for them. I’m also not the right farrier if you only want thier feet done 2-3 times a year. Let’s do better for our long eared friends! 🫏🫏🫏

Being 13 days old is tough work! Training for trimming has already started for this handsome c**t. Mom is an A+ example for him to learn from when it comes to standing perfect for the farrier. It’s always exciting working on foals and seeing how proper farrier care at a young age sets them up for a long life with healthy hooves!

TW: animal death/animal dissection:

I want to give a huge thank you to Cristina Brogdon for hosting a dissection clinic where we had the opportunity to do a full horse dissection. While it can be hard to seperate our love for an animal with the task of dissection, the opportunities to learn are invaluable. We were able to learn not only from the legs and hoof, but also the whole horse. It was a great weekend for the Southwest PHCP Group. Continuing education is so important as a hoof care practitioner. This opportunity is one I am forever thankful for, and thankful to the owner of Allie who allowed us to learn from her passing due to colic.
