Cocina del Barrio: Mexican Culinary Tradition
🫓🌽

Join us Sunday, May 24 from 2–5 p.m. at Rancho Los Cerritos for a hands-on food and cultural workshop connected to our current exhibition *Seeds of Resilience: Barrio Americano.*

Led by ethnobotanist and local business owner Carina Lavin, the workshop explores the cultural significance of corn, nixtamalization, grinding on a metate, and making handmade tortillas — all gathered around a community comal.

"Gathering around the comal in community reawakens the ancestral memory of cooking with an open fire. These practices help us remember the foods we grew up with, the traditions that continue to nourish and connect us."* — Carina Lavin

The comal itself — brought to life by LB Fresh and PlacemakingUS with support from AARP, the Port of Long Beach, Arts Council for Long Beach, and Community Engagement — is more than a cooking surface. It's a place to gather, teach, remember, and pass something forward.
