Daily Rider returns, and what better way to do it than with the KTM 990 RC R? I would love to try to answer your questions about this bike, if you have them.

This isn’t quite my first ride back (stay tuned for that) but I’m easing back into some Daily Rider machines and this CBR650R is a bike that has been requested again and again. The E-Clutch is an interesting curveball, and also worth talking about. Questions please, but make ‘em polite and easy, will ya? I’m rusty.

Onboard footage from my KTM 990 RC R crash in Spain. I had just slowed down to honk at my buddy, and next thing ya know I’m in the gravel. Of course it’s more complicated than that. So, I analyzed the footage, and the TechAir data provided by (second slide), to try to learn from what happened. My article will be up on Common Tread tomorrow (link to in profile), talking about what I can take from the data and the emotions after a crash. Plus the warnings that the tires gave me (last clip) earlier in the day.

Health update: I’m putting weight on my ankle and could be out of the walking boot as soon as next month. The C7 vertebrae is slower to heal, but fingers crossed I’ll be clear to ride in March or April. Stay tuned, and thanks to everyone who messaged words of support and empathy 💪❤️

Five weeks since the worst crash of my life. Time for an update.

I asked Kat to take this photo of me right after the ankle surgeon told me this is a life-changing injury. It felt important, maybe it wasn’t. There will be more pain, more frustration and bad days, and I am coming around to the idea that I am ready for all of it. Even with a fractured C7 vertebrae, cracked ribs, and an ankle full of metal I am going to try not to let it change my life more than it should.

If you’re a friend finding out here, I’m sorry I haven’t been in touch. If you follow Daily Rider, CTXP, and HSLS, I’ll get back with you as soon as I can. Doc says I should be able to walk in a few months. Sometimes the body keeps going and the mind catches up. Sometimes it’s the other way around.

Not pictured here: my dear ol’ dad who flew to Spain to help me get home; my friends who have sent love and food and helped my family through a rough month; my coworkers for shouldering an extra load while I’m gone; my superhuman wife and partner, Kat, who seems to have the energy of the sun.

Time has come for Suzuki’s new-for-‘25 DR-Z4 to hit the Daily Rider route. It has a 5-speed gearbox and it costs $9,000 and I already know you can make jokes about that, so, what else ya got? Also, are you more S or SM? Recording next week, hit me with your questions!
