Please join us in sending all the love and strength to SCF tribe members Josh, Ashley and Parker as they gear up to kick some leukemia a** once and for all after Josh’s recent relapse.

This community knows all about digging deep during an initial diagnosis. And even deeper for a relapse.

It’s ok to feel all the things, Fritts family, and there are no limits to the depths of support we have for you.

You’ve got this. And you are not alone.

April, 2019, I made the decision to use my many years of experience as an oncology nurse and time spent in the non profit realm to create my own foundation while continuing to work as a bmt/onc nurse.

Just a few months in, I met Scarlett, just diagnosed with AML in a new city.

Grateful for the newly acquired ability to offer her some relief outside of my nursing role, we formed a unique bond. One where we were both navigating new spaces.

Seven years and many experiences, both shared and unique, later, I am thrilled to announce that Scarlett has agreed to dedicate herself as our Director of Operations.

The first time I’ve ever officially had someone to rely on for the day to day workings of the foundation.

With her own non profit experience and personal knowledge of the cancer journey, I am so very excited about where we, alongside our overwhelmingly dedicated board members, can take the foundation.

Because there is always more you can do to help.

Love you, Scarlett!
-Kate Poppert RN. Founder.

Horses teach us to love without words.

And the love shared between SCF tribe member Maria and Church spoke volumes.

Maria was a part of the very first Equine healing event where we partnered with our friends and at their to bring those affected by cancer into the healing world of horses.

Maria immediately bonded with the handsome Church at a time when she was feeling lost and overwhelmed after being newly diagnosed with the same cancer that took her father when she was a young woman.

Church seemed to sense her anxiety and together they found a place of peace and acceptance.

Maria visited Church whenever she could so when the ranch moved out to California, she was devastated.

Recently, learning there were no more treatment options, Maria began checking off her bucket list items, the biggest one getting to see Church again.

Small Choices stepped in to provide the funds for the reunion and Maria spent a few blissful days with her long lost friend. The night before she was to fly home, Maria peacefully earned her angel wings filled with love and happiness.

Rest easy, Maria. Here’s to finding Church again on your next adventure. We love you!

Shout out to the first recipient of the Ciarra Boyer memorial “Angels Among Us” award for Volunteer of the Year—Linda Marquez! 👏💛

Since day one of Small Choices, Linda has poured her heart into bringing handmade joy to hospital rooms through her many talents, including creating countless hand-sewn pillowcases, Kleenex covers, port pillows, and holiday gift bags.

After experiencing the challenges of a cancer diagnosis by her late husband Tony’s side, Linda continues to dedicate herself to bringing comfort and compassion to others.

The only question she ever asks is: “How many do you need?”

Thank you, Linda!! You are a gift!!💐✨

“I put in a referral for a patient for Kari Bears. This may be tight but is there any way I could come get them after work today? His 4 kids are coming to visit tomorrow and he was wanting to give them to them if possible.”

12 hr shifts worked as Oncology nurses: ✅

Home to gather bears and other comfort items: ✅

Drive out after work to pick up bag then bring it back to hospital to ensure bears are there in time for kids’ visit: ✅

This is the heart of Small Choices.
Because there’s always something more you can do to help.

Sending magic Kari’s Bears hugs for Mother’s Day to all the moms out there.

To our survivors at home, to those currently separated by treatment, and to the families missing those above.

You are so very loved.

We couldn’t let Nurses Week pass without a shout-out to the many nurses who bring kindness and care not only to infusion days and inpatient stays, but also beyond the hospital—serving as board members and volunteers with Small Choices. Thank you for the difference you make every day. 💙

How many CEO’s do you know who take home patients’ laundry?

Probably just one— our fearless founder and CEO, Kate Poppert. Amidst all the buzz of Gala week, she still made time to wash, fold, and deliver. Why?? 👇❤️

“Because people smile when they receive gift cards, but they cry when they get clean laundry delivered to their hospital room.”

🫧 Because, even the most cutting-edge cancer treatment plans leave small voids that are felt by patients, like having clean socks and underwear during a hospital stay.

Kate is quick to extend gratitude to everyone who showed up to support Small Choices this week, but we’d be remiss not to sound off for the woman who, quite literally, makes it all happen. 🦸‍♀️

You all know what to do— Gratitude for Kate in the comments, sound off please!! 📣

Behind every successful 5280 Gala is a small army of people to thank for donating their time and talent, making the event so successful. ✨

To our board members, volunteers who created the gourmet buffet spread, Poppert kiddos who bartended, our tribe members who shared their stories and hearts, our vendors, companies who donated auction items, healthcare workers who show up during their time off, and our loyal community of supporters…THANK YOU. ❤️❤️❤️

Our village knows how to take care of one another. 🫂
