Lompoc mayor asks state to reconsider restrictions on Surf Beach fishing ban 05/12/2026

Lompoc mayor asks state to reconsider restrictions on Surf Beach fishing ban Lompoc Mayor Jim Mosby says recreational finfish fishing was restricted about 20 years ago, cutting off a tradition tied to local culture and food access for some families.

These stickers have been a longstanding presence in our town. We have recently learned that the California Fish and Game Commission will discuss the possibility of allowing recreational finfish fishing at Surf Beach. Our Council first wrote to request this opportunity in January 2020, and we now have the chance to make our case. A public hearing for Item 8B is scheduled for May 5th at 8:00 AM at the Hilton Garden Inn, 6878 Hollister Avenue in Goleta.

VOTE YES ON MEASURE B. SAVE OUR STREETS. One of the most asked questions that I receive is, "WHEN ARE WE GOING TO FIX THE STRRETS????" The current estimated dollar amount needed to bring our streets up to a good condition is over 70 million dollars. The streets are of an age that requires significant repair. Every year that we delay, especially wet years, will increase the cost. We now have a chance to address the problem. Vote yes on measure B.

An independent review found that a significant number of past rebate applications were approved with material errors, some missing contractor license verification and other required information. That is a failure of process, not of our residents.

Let me be clear: the responsibility to properly review and approve these applications rests with the City, not the applicant.

Because of this, I will be calling for an independent investigation into prior years of the program to fully understand the scope of the issue and ensure transparency.

At the same time, we must take an approach that is fair and equitable to our community:

- Residents who acted in good faith should not be penalized for the City’s oversight failures
- A formal “cure period” should be established, allowing applicants time to correct, complete missing information, withdraw applications, or, if necessary, return funds
- Where possible, this may be as simple as submitting proper documentation or verifying contractor licensing
- In cases where work cannot be verified, we should pursue reasonable, case-by-case resolutions, not automatic penalties
- Any evidence of intentional fraud should be handled appropriately and referred for further review

While there is currently no indication that residents intentionally sought to defraud the City, the gaps in our approval process created unacceptable risk and potential exposure to litigation, and that must be addressed.

I am committed to fixing the system, not punishing those who relied on it in good faith.

Accountability matters. Fairness matters. And restoring your trust matters.

The “zombie apocalypse” feels alive and well in Lompoc.

Earlier this week, after getting off work, I walked out to find a man standing directly in front of my exit, blocking my path. He was completely frozen and unresponsive when I asked if he was okay. As I cautiously stepped closer, I noticed an exceptionally large knife at his side, reflecting under the streetlights.

I immediately backed away and called 911.

Within what felt like seconds, law enforcement arrived and handled the situation swiftly and professionally, removing what could have become a serious threat.

Grateful for LPD’s quick response and commitment to keeping our town safe.

The upcoming Lompoc City Council meeting (12/16/2025) will bring some transparency concerning the $46,000,000 ++++ project. Adopted amidst the pandemic, this multimodal street plan entails significant modifications. Ocean Avenue's eastbound traffic at H street will be condensed into one lane, eliminating on-street parking, and tree removal and sidewalk elimination are planned. Shared bicycle and pedestrian lanes will replace sidewalks without curbs, and lanes will be narrowed, prioritizing bicycle traffic over vehicular traffic on Hwy 246 and Hwy 1, ( north H street and east and west Ocean Avenue).

Buyer beware. I have faced criticism for documenting a vendor selling food in the gutter, street, and sidewalk on A street last October. For those questioning my motivations, please review the posted article.

Happy Halloween. I enjoyed participating in last Saturday's old town trick or treat event by handing out candy. I appreciate the efforts of all those who helped make this event a success. Hundreds of young trick or treaters had a wonderful experience.

Lompoc considers new ordinance allowing vehicle towing after 72 hours 10/30/2025

We are working hard to help the illegal and unsafe parking issue in Lompoc. Streets are for parking not storage. I have had several complaints from residents in town who come home from working all day and can't find a place to park in front of the home that they rent or own. This is the next step to get people to help themselves out of illegally parking.
