The pair of identical 1880s swing bridges in the Niagara River and Tonawanda Creek could rotate (“swing”) out of the way to allow boats to pass. When swung across their respective waterways, they permitted train traffic between the mainland and Tonawanda and Goose Islands. This (south) bridge opened in 1886. Neither has moved in decades.
