MEN'S MENTAL HEALTH MONTH
What happens when a man starts feeling like his value is tied only to what he provides?
What he earns.
What he fixes.
What he achieves.
What he sacrifices.
What he can do for everyone else.
For many boys, that message starts early.
- Be tough.
- Don't cry.
- Handle it.
- Make something of yourself.
As they grow into young men and adults, the expectations often grow with them.
- Get the job.
- Pay the bills.
- Take care of your family.
- Figure it out.
- Keep pushing.
And while responsibility is important, many men quietly begin to feel that their worth is connected to what they produce rather than who they are.
Over time, that pressure becomes heavy.
- A financial setback feels personal.
- A job loss feels like failure.
- Retirement can feel like a loss of purpose.
- An injury can feel like a loss of identity.
- Even asking for help can feel uncomfortable.
Many boys and young men grow up receiving praise for what they do more than who they are.
- Good job.
- Way to handle that.
- Keep working hard.
- Be strong.
Over time, some begin to believe their value comes from:
- Performance
- Achievements
- Income
- Athletic ability
- Grades
- What they can do for other people
That's why setbacks can sometimes hit harder than people realize.
It isn't always about the job, the money, the relationship, or the circumstance.
Sometimes it's about what those things became connected to: their sense of worth.
Men are significantly less likely than women to seek mental health treatment, yet men account for the majority of su***de deaths in the United States.
Black men often face additional barriers, including:
- Mental health stigma
- Limited access to culturally responsive care
- Distrust of systems that have not always served our communities well
Let's Talk About It 👇🏾
One of the biggest misconceptions is that men only need support when they ask for it.
Many never learned how.
Some learned to:
- Stay busy instead of opening up
- Hide stress behind work
- Keep their struggles to themselves
- Believe being needed was more important than being known
For the women reading this, think about the men you love:
- The husband carrying pressure he never talks about
- The father who believes everyone else comes first
- The brother who always says he's fine
- The son trying to prove himself
- The friend who never asks for help
Sometimes the strongest-looking person in the room is carrying the heaviest load.
➡️ Try This Today
If you're a young man, or man, sit with this question:
Who am I beyond what I provide, Who am I outside of sports, school or work?
No rushing.
No fixing.
No performing.
Just sit with it honestly.
If you're checking on a boy, young man, or man you love, skip:
"How's work?"
"How's school?"
Try:
"How have YOU been doing lately?"
Then stay.
Listen.
Don't rush to fix it.
Why This Matters
At DRE'S Safe Place®, we believe emotional wellness belongs to everyone.
- The provider
- The protector
- The helper
- The caregiver
- The young man still trying to find his place
- The man carrying responsibilities nobody sees
- The man who has been strong for so long he forgot he's allowed to rest
Because people deserve to be valued for who they are, not just for what they do❤️
Time to wake the trenches up.. Get those lineman active.
