Over the years “Keeping It Real” has changed in our community. Authenticity is staying true to your own voice whatever that narrative is. But as the commercialization of hip hop continues to grow, keepin it real seems to only be tied to a check. Meanwhile it’s a checkmate in our community as we continue to lead in many negative statistics from education, employment, incarceration rates, health disparities, mental health crises and so much more. Hip Hop ain’t to blame though, the commercial marketing of certain types of black music is definitely having a negative impact on the collective.

Is hip hop still a tool for the revolution, or has the industry successfully tuned out music into a distraction? Let’s build on this… MCE
