What is a Direct Support Professional? This is a question that we are asked often, and one we love to answer! 💜

A Direct Support Professional provides individualized support that helps people remain active and engaged in their communities while working toward personal goals. Daily responsibilities can look different for everyone, but may include things like assisting with outdoor activities, supporting skill development, encouraging independence, providing transportation, and promoting health and well-being. A DSP role is about building meaningful relationships with the people we support and playing an important part in helping them participate in everyday life, making choices, and maintaining routines that are important to them.

The words of the families we serve mean more than we can express. We wanted to share the full message from an ICM parent below:

"Our sweet 5-year-old son, Noah, is nonverbal and has Level 3 Autism. From an early age, we knew he was special and would benefit from early intervention services. After going through the lengthy process of getting a diagnosis, we enrolled him in a school that could support his needs. We had discussed ABA therapy before, but initially thought it would be a better fit within the school setting. I was hesitant about the time commitment and the idea of opening our home to a therapy team every day of the week.

At home, Noah often showed aggression because he did not yet have an effective way to communicate his wants and needs. His older sister, Austyn, and younger brother, Baylor, were hesitant to get too close to him because of those behaviors. Eventually, we decided to begin in-home ABA therapy, and looking back, it was one of the best decisions we could have made for our family.

Although it took time to find the right team, we are incredibly grateful for the one we have now. Since beginning ABA therapy, we have watched Noah grow tremendously. He has learned to communicate his needs in his own way, and we’ve seen him begin developing meaningful relationships with his siblings, classmates, and friends at church.

His therapy team has helped him learn important life skills, including patience and understanding that sometimes he has to wait before doing a preferred activity, like watching TV — one of his favorite things. They have also worked closely with him on potty training, and he has made incredible progress.

One of the biggest blessings for our family has been the consistency and dedication of his therapist. She works with Noah every day on both new goals and the skills he has already mastered, helping him continue to grow and succeed.

Our consultant with ICM has also been incredible throughout this journey. She has answered countless texts and phone calls from me whenever I’ve had concerns about Noah’s therapy, both at home and at school. She has offered guidance and practical suggestions for addressing challenges we’ve faced, and she has even attended meetings with Noah’s teachers and therapists at school to help ensure everyone is working together to support him. Having that level of support and advocacy has meant so much to our family.

Without ICM and the support of his ABA team, I truly don’t know where Noah would be on this journey or what our family dynamic would look like today. We are so thankful for the progress he has made and for the hope and support they have provided our entire family."
