To many people, the Outer Banks are synonymous with shipwrecks.

Did you know that there is estimated to be over 2,000 shipwrecks off the coast of North Carolina?

But why? Flowing like massive rivers in the sea, the cold-water Labrador Current from the north and the warm Gulf Stream from the south converge just offshore from Cape Hatteras National Seashore. To take advantage of these currents, vessels must draw close to the Outer Banks. As those currents move quick, sand and sediment build up creating underwater sandbars which constantly shift.

Myrtle Beach, SC - The Myrtle Beach Police Department has David Brian Plump, 61, of Myrtle Beach, in custody following an investigation into an armed robbery at Home Depot on Oak Forest Lane on August 12, 2022. Plump was identified within hours and taken into custody late last night.

Shortly after the robbery, officers used traffic cameras to identify the vehicle involved and shared the photos on social media. Almost immediately investigators received tips from community members who recognized Plump from photos posted on social media and shared by news outlets. Investigators and real-time crime analysts confirmed the person involved was Plump and after obtaining warrants, officers took Plump into custody without incident at his residence.

“This case is an example of why Myrtle Beach is not a place to commit crimes; this police department and this community stand together against crime,” said Chief Amy Prock. “This case was solved in hours thanks to our community’s commitment to public safety and an incredible team of police officers supported by the best technology.”

Plump is in custody at the Myrtle Beach Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing. He is charged with armed robbery.
