Letter to the Editor from one of our faithful "Wednesdays With(out) Congressman Lloyd Smucker" regulars Steve Sauer:

A letter that’s stuck in my craw (“The people must ensure that members of government do their duty and follow Constitution,” Sept. 12 LNP | LancasterOnline) defends efforts to deport immigrants because, in the writer’s opinion, they are not merely immigrants but “criminals” and “invaders.”

Has the letter writer considered Pastor Molis Augustave, formerly of York? He was detained in early September for driving with a broken headlight, separated from his family, placed into custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, shipped to Louisiana for detainment, and spared from one deportation flight to Haiti on Sept. 17, only to be deported one week later.

Jesus said, as quoted in Matthew 26:55, “Why are you coming forth with swords and clubs to arrest me, as though I were a bandit? Day after day I sat teaching in the temple, and you did not arrest me.”

So it was with Pastor Molis, who preached here with temporary protected status until President Donald Trump in July revoked that protection status for Haitian immigrants. Did that make Molis an invader? Did his headlight make him a criminal? Did he truly deserve his fate of deportation?

Now his church in York is without its pastor. His young son and daughter, Isaac and Sofia, are without their father, and his wife, Omara, a U.S. citizen, is without her husband. His ongoing legal proceedings could not guarantee his day in court.

In my view, the United States needs a revolution that treats all humans with equal dignity. In this Nov. 3 election, vote your conscience.

Hello, Congressman Smucker!

Today Trump said, “If Republicans win the House of Representatives and the Senate in the 2026 Midterm Elections, I'm going to give all Adult Citizens in the United States of America, $5,000.”

That's $1.2 trillion dollars that Trump is offering for votes.

You recently posted your concern about the deficit. Where is all that money coming from?

You are an advocate for the rule of law. Isn’t it a federal crime to attempt to bribe voters?

You took an oath to uphold the Constitution. Isn’t it up to Congress to disperse funds?

Yesterday Trump said, “My Administration will, immediately, begin sending 'Checks' of nearly $100 to over 20 MILLION wonderful Seniors to help pay for their Medicare Part B premium.”

That’s another $2 billion dollars Trump is offering for votes.

I have not heard a peep from you about the impact of this on the deficit. Trump is again taking advantage of supine and submissive Congressional Republicans who have conveniently forgotten their oaths.

To be honest, this $100 bribe to seniors is insultingly small, less than 4% of Medicare B’s cost of $2,435/year in 2026. That is a 10% increase over 2025’s cost of $2020/year because of Trump’s budget, which you voted for.

Trump makes a couple of obvious attempts to bribe voters, you and your Congressional colleagues abandon the Constitution, the deficit does not merit any mention, and seniors get insulted.

I bet your constituents have a few questions for you.
