Robert (Bob) Mueller has passed away at age 82. His life was marked by service—as a Marine, as FBI Director, and as someone who spent decades trying to uphold the rule of law. When concerns about Donald Trump’s conduct placed the country in a moment of uncertainty, Mueller was drawn into the center of it.

The Russia investigation was carried out under his direction with steady, deliberate care. A pattern of false statements was uncovered, several Trump associates were indicted, and detailed evidence of obstruction was laid out. Even as Trump and his allies attacked him and tried to undermine his work, Mueller stayed focused on the facts and allowed the record to speak for itself, even when others chose not to act on it.

To many Americans, he came to represent someone who tried to hold a president accountable despite intense pressure and political hostility. His work revealed how fragile the nation’s democratic safeguards had become, and how close they came to being pushed aside.

History will likely remember Mueller not for the choices others made about his findings, but for the steadiness and integrity he brought to a moment when both were in short supply.

Rest in peace, Bob.
