Insurance companies cannot legally require you to get your car repaired at a specific shop. You have the right to choose any qualified repair facility you prefer.
However, they can and often do recommend shops within their "preferred" or "direct repair" network.

Your Right to Choose: Laws in most U.S. states protect your right as a consumer to select the repair shop for your vehicle. An insurance company cannot force you to go to a particular place or penalize you for using a non-network shop (e.g., by not paying the claim).
"Preferred" Networks: Insurance companies create these networks with shops that agree to pre-negotiated rates and use certain parts (like aftermarket or used parts instead of new OEM parts) in exchange for a high volume of business. This arrangement is primarily for the insurer's financial benefit, not necessarily the quality of the repair.
Potential for Pressure: While they cannot mandate a shop, insurance adjusters might use tactics to steer you toward their network, such as implying:
They cannot guarantee the repairs if done elsewhere (the repair shop is actually responsible for the warranty on its work).
The repair process will be delayed if you use an out-of-network shop.
You might have to pay the difference if your chosen shop charges more than the "reasonable amount" the insurer is willing to pay based on their estimates.
Ultimately, the choice of where to repair your car is yours. It's recommended to choose a reputable shop that offers a solid warranty on its work and is willing to work with your insurance company to ensure your car is repaired to its pre-accident condition.
