✈️ We're Lisbon bound!

In just days, The 1895 Project students will be touching down in Lisbon, Portugal, and we are bursting with pride for every single one of them. This trip is the result of months of dedication and preparation, and they are MORE than ready.

Hear it from the students themselves:

🌟 "I want to come to Lisbon because I see it as an opportunity to experience a new culture, see places I've never seen before, and meet people from different backgrounds. What excites me most is everything I'll learn while I'm there—discovering what's different, experiencing new things, and understanding how life works in another country" — Nevaeh
🌟 "The trip (to Lisbon) represents a chance to step into those spaces that stretch me. It is an opportunity to ask questions, to listen intentionally, and learn with humility" — Addison
🌟 "I hope to represent not only myself, but also other young girls who dream big and refuse to let anything limit their future" — Amira
🌟 "I want to understand Portugal not as a tourist but as a student of the world, and bring the lessons I learned back to my community" — Amnah
🌟 "The opportunity to travel to Lisbon is not merely a vacation; it's a chance to immerse myself in a culture vastly different from my own, fostering a global mindset that will undoubtedly influence my future" — Sylvia

This experience is about so much more than travel. It's about expanding horizons, building confidence, and showing our young leaders that the world belongs to them too. 🌍

We are making one final call for support! If you'd like to help cover last-minute trip expenses, dinners, snacks, and those little moments that make a trip truly unforgettable, please consider sending a contribution via Cash App:

Happy Juneteenth from The 1895 Project!

On June 19, 1865, the last enslaved people in Galveston, Texas finally received word of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed. That day became Juneteenth: America's second Independence Day.

The Juneteenth flag was created in 1997 by activist Ben Haith to give the holiday a symbol, and every element of it was carefully chosen.

🔴🤍🔵 The Colors (Red, White & Blue): Deliberately matching the American flag to affirm that Black Americans were always American, through enslavement and beyond. The red also honors the blood shed on the journey to freedom.
⭐ The Star: Represents Texas, the Lone Star State, where freedom was finally proclaimed, and beyond that, freedom for Black Americans in all 50 states.
💥 The Burst: The nova surrounding the star represents a new beginning. A moment of liberation. A fresh start.
🌅 The Arc: The curved line stretching across the flag represents a new horizon, the hope and opportunity that lies ahead for future generations.
That last symbol, the new horizon, is what drives The 1895 Project every single day. We exist to make sure the young people in our community can actually reach that horizon. Through our programs, our Cotillion, and our commitment to enriching the lives of high school students, we are investing in the generation that carries this legacy forward.

To every student, family, and community member we serve: today we celebrate how far we've come. And we recommit to how far we'll go. 🖤

Happy Juneteenth.

Passports: ✅
Packing lists: ✅
Butterflies in the stomach: very much ✅

We're 12 days out and the prep is very real. Our students have been meeting, planning, and getting ready to represent themselves, and their communities, on an international stage.

This is more than a trip. It's a whole process. And we love every moment of it.

As we enter the final stretch, we're still raising funds to help cover student expenses such as airport meals, museum visits, cultural experiences, and other educational activities during the trip. If you'd like to support these incredible young people, there's still time to make a contribution.
