We are a certified B Corp: Now what?

We are a certified B Corp: Now what? Discover how our B Corp certification journey transformed our business practices, enhanced community engagement, and reinforced our commitment to balancing purpose with profit.

Most managers have heard the saying: Hire good people and get out of their way. I’ve thought about this many times throughout my career, but today, I received one of the most striking examples of this principle in action.

Here’s an email I received:

"When we did the 🌳 projects for 🏬 last year, looking at the original designs from 👩 left something to be desired.

One thing I felt needed to be addressed was their use of Viburnum Plicatum Tomentosum “Mariesi” (doublefile viburnum).

Doublefile viburnum is native to China. It's not a bad plant, it grows super-fast, gets big, blooms in spring when everything else blooms, and usually gets cut into a green meatball.

But no longer. We didn’t have to use cookie-cutter plants.

We replaced the Mariesi with Diane Witchhazel.

Watching little wasps fly around open, fragrant blooms in February when there is no competition from the rush of everything blooming in May made me feel good today.

Maybe you will like these pictures too. Because before long, it will be May. And we might not notice little details."

This email is a perfect example of why hiring the right people matters... not just for skill, but for alignment with your company’s purpose.

So, here’s my addition to that old adage:
🔹 Communicate your company’s purpose.
🔹 Hire people who share that purpose.
🔹 Empower them to do what inspires them.

The results speak for themselves. 🌿
