Run for Eliza. Finish her run.

34-year-old Eliza Fletcher, mother of two, was running around 4 a.m. last week near the University of Memphis when a man attacked her and forced her into an SUV, where he stayed parked for four minutes before driving off. She was found two days later, dead.

Those four minutes haunt me in particular.

The next time you run, I hope you’ll pray for her family and also pray for other runners’ safety.

If you run regularly, it’s highly likely you’ve been harassed regularly.

A 2021 survey of more than 2,000 runners found 60% of women reported being harassed while running, with 25% reporting regularly enduring sexist comments or unwanted sexual advances.

Even more alarming, 6% reported having felt so threatened while running that they feared for their lives, per the survey by the @runnersworldmag.

Have you been harassed while running? While nothing can bring Eliza, Molly and countless others who been attacked while running, my hope is to raise awareness of the issue.

I also STRONGLY encourage you to read the full article from Runner’s World, linked below, which I’ll also share in my stories.

While there is nothing we can do to 100% protect ourselves at all times (running or otherwise), there are things we can do to reduce risk and help ourselves feel more comfortable. (Read those tips at afoodiestaysfit.com and search “run safely.”) But if you love the joy of running alone, I do believe raising awareness of harassment is one step we can take for improved safety in our communities.

I encourage you to talk to your city officials about additional safety measures for recreational areas and talk to the men in your life about how they can help women feel safer. Hopefully I’m preaching to the choir here but honking, cat calling or teasing is never acceptable.

MY TOP WINTER RUNNING SAFETY ESSENTIALS ⬇️

Many women report feeling unsafe or have had negative experiences while running alone, leading to a reluctance to run alone. As the winter draws in and the days get shorter, it becomes more challenging for women to get out and run whilst feeling safe.
