When despair for the world grows in me and I wake in the night at the least sound in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be, I go and lie down where the wood drake rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds. I come into the peace of wild things who do not tax their lives with forethought of grief. I come into the presence of still water. And I feel above me the day-blind stars waiting with their light. For a time I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

My valentine

Strange serendipity

It’s Todd’s birthday. I’m staying at a little Airbnb on Clay Ave, a couple houses down from the house he was living in when I met him and down the street from Woodland Park, where his memorial is.

I’m in town recording background vocals for with and Todd’s old bandmate, .

We’re recording with on Devonia Ave, a couple streets down from Glenn Pl, where Todd was living at the end of his life.

We’re playing an acoustic set “no drummer” for a flood benefit at tonight.

Todd was a great drummer and a better guy. Overflowing with love and generosity. The love and generosity he showed me, I hope to pay forward.

As I’m typing this “Haunt Me” comes on

You’ve likely seen him manning the keys for Magnolia Boulevard or flexing his muscles on a guitar with Grayson Jenkins or Abby Hamilton, but now Ryan Allen is stepping up from sideman to main act, and rightfully so. The Breathitt County, Kentucky native possesses a southern drawl equal parts Sturgill Simpson and Keith Whitley with a stoic sense of humor that would even give John Prine a chuckle on tantalizing tales he’s honed behind the scenes over several years grinding away in music and in life.
