Every year, hundreds of people fleeing violence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Eritrea, Somalia, Sudan, and other African countries arrive in America following long and treacherous journeys including long stays in refugee camps, imprisonments or living as illegal immigrants or asylum seekers in various countries. This year, we have seen a steep increase in the number of African migrants seeking asylum at the US-Mexico border – many of whom are being held in detention centers or simply sent back to Mexico – suggesting that there is a real crisis begging for an appropriate response.
That’s why Nehemiah’s Cry for Development aims to serve and promote the integration and self-sufficiency of refugees living in Lexington, Kentucky. We are trying to help them meet their basic needs and gain access to various resources and opportunities that are available.

With your help, NCD can give incoming refugees what we’d want for ourselves, a smooth transition into a new country. But we can’t do it without the support of people like you. Please give what you can to help refugee families.

English Second Language Classes
Our ESL program was developed to address one of the most often self-identified needs of refugees in Lexington: practical, conversational English language instruction.
At the end of this program, students will have the basic English language skills needed to communicate with their landlord, schedule an appointment, fill out a job application, talk to their child’s teacher, or describe symptoms during a doctor’s visit.

Upon arriving in the United States, most refugees are supported by
resettlement agencies during their first ninety days. After that period, however, they are forced to fend for themselves. That’s when NCD steps in and tries to help them meet their basic needs and gain access to various resources. We facilitate their successful integration into the communities and help them achieve more stability and independence.

When war broke out in the congo, Mr. Lusiwe fled to Namibia with hisnfamily. During his stay there, he had the opportunity to learn English as well as other social work and chronic illness management. This opened the door to working as a community worker in the camp, conducting counselling sessions for those affected by HIV/AIDS, as well as orphans and single mothers.
During his stay at the refugee camp in Namibia, Kikoko decided to apply for relocation to the United States. After a successful application and interview, he and his family were relocated to Lexington Kentucky where he now resides and works in his community.
