I’m beyond excited to let you know I’ll be teaming up with Natasha Nurse to take over as hosts of The Authority.
First, a huge thank you to Ross Romano and Jethro Jones, EdD for the foundation they’ve created and their trust in us to carry The Authority forward.
Next, a huge shout out to Thinkering Collective. Since I replied to their post on Substack, Jim, Evin, and Garrett have consistently helped open doors and expand my thinking about what is possible.
Lastly, thank you to those who have already agreed to be our guests! I’ve fully prepped for our first two interviews. You are in for a treat! Lori and Lainie are both such a wealth of knowledge.
Our goal is to continue using The Authority as a space where leaders can come to find fresh perspectives and ideas. And we’re excited to add companion episodes that build bridges to implementation, because educators are too busy and the work is too important to keep starting over.
There is a better way: let’s fold in new ideas, test small, and scale smart, so that we gain new ground for our students.

Right now, many schools are having students set goals. What will you do with those goals? Could you use them to spark true student agency?
In a recent conversation with Christian Wetell, we started with what the KED model considers non-negotiables. Educational leaders will benefit from seeing this list. The simplicity will encourage you!
The most impactful school improvements come from stripping away the nonessential, focusing on what matters most, and then rebuilding from that alignment.
Today, I hope this article and the included reflection allow you to find one thing you can do this week to begin cultivating student agency, big-picture thinking, and teacher professionalism in your schools.

Excited about a new project for a client. I love how the two sides of my business feed one another!
We're creating systems and creating content to support those systems. I heard myself say something to this client today that I think we all need to hear...
It's just a system. If it has you stuck reacting all day, it isn't serving your goals. We can design what we need to get the outcomes we want, tweaking along the way because life isn't perfect.
So, small biz people, you don't have to stay in a system that isn't working.
Schools, let's stop saying "the system is broken" and build a better one that serves kids without killing adults (slightly hyperbolic, but mental state and stress impact overall health)
If you don't fall into either of those camps, but feel you're stuck reacting all day. Stop. Design a better way forward.
