Great results in Arlington. One thing to note is that they do not have FREE CURBSIDE COMPOST like we do in Lexington, so we could expect our waste reduction to be higher at about 30%!
Arlington cut waste by 16 percent with automated bins. Lexington residents will soon vote on similar program. Opponents of Article 31 secured a referendum and it will go before residents for a vote on June 16. The motion is an initial step by the town toward implementing a new waste removal program.

Simply put: toxic chemicals used in packaging are insufficiently regulated in the United States. And when packaging sheds microplastics into your food and drink—it’s leaching chemicals too.
Join us in calling on legislators to restrict plastic packaging now. People deserve safer packaging and stronger protections.

What if we could wipe out nearly a third of Lexington’s household trash overnight? 🌍✨
According to MassDEP, switching to a volume-based waste structure isn't just a minor policy tweak—it is the single most effective way to reduce municipal solid waste.
When communities make this shift, the ecological ripple effect is massive. On average, municipalities see a 32% reduction in trash tonnage.
Where does all that "waste" go? It gets diverted into sustainable systems:
🌱 Food Waste Composting: Keeps heavy organics out of waste stream so they can be turned into nutrient-rich soil.
♻️ Enhanced Recycling: Encourages mindful sorting so valuable materials like clean paper, cardboard, and plastics actually get recycled.
🧸 Donation & Reuse: Motivates us to pause before tossing items that local people or charities could easily reuse.
🤔Conscious consumerism: Makes us think about whether we’re bringing home unnecessary goods such as single-use items and products with excess packaging.
LexZeroWaste supports a YES vote in the Special Election on June 16.
