The Bates College women's rowing team is currently across the pond in England, preparing to compete in the Henley Royal Regatta.

But in late May, they were stateside in Georgia at Lake Lanier Olympic Park, where they finished national runner-up at the NCAA Division III Rowing Championship.

We were there to get a behind-the-scenes look as the Bobcats "climbed the mountain," going from not even making nationals two years ago, to second in the country this year!

On June 12, with Reunion in full swing, Phyllis Graber Jensen, the college’s longtime director of photography and video, did something highly unusual.

She showed up at a Bates College event without any camera, save the one on her cell phone, and she did not make a single image.

That’s because the event was the opening of the Bates College Museum of Art's exhibition, “Phyllis Graber Jensen: Picture Stories,” which will be up through Sept. 19.

Curated by museum Director Carrie Cushman, this is a true retrospective of Graber Jensen’s work, spanning her time from student photographer to staff photographer at the Boston Herald and then her 31 years in Maine at Bates.

Speaking to the audience, Graber Jensen praised the “imagination and vision” of Cushman, who joined Bates in August 2025 and took on the retrospective as the first exhibit she would curate.

“It’s a gift and a privilege to have someone of such immense talents and kindness, someone who barely knew me and had just arrived on the scene, take such an interest in offering context and insight to the work I produced during the last 50-plus years of my life.“ Graber Jensen said. “That’s lots of ground to cover in a very short period of time. Yet she persevered, and here we are.”

A new chapter for the Bates and Maine MILL partnership.

Bates College and Lewiston’s Maine Museum of Innovation, Labor, and Learning Maine MILL have engaged in curricular, internship, and research opportunities and collaboration on signature events since the museum's founding in 1996 (then known as Museum L/A). That’s no surprise, given that the museum called the Bates Mill Complex home for the last 30 years.

In recognition of that enduring partnership, Bates is making a $75,000 gift to Maine MILL’s new, stand-alone building, which opens June 27. Visitors to the new museum at 1 Beech St. — housed in another mill, most recently known as the Camden Yarns Mill — will enter through the Bates College Welcome Center.

“We are delighted to partner with Maine MILL as it starts a new chapter in its new home,” said President Garry W. Jenkins. “Both institutions share a commitment to education and access that makes this collaboration a perfect fit. And we love the thought that Bates will be one part of the rich and complex Lewiston story that guests from around the country and the world will learn about during their visit to Maine MILL.”

The Class of 1976, Bates’ 50th Reunion class, returned to campus yesterday, and began celebrating “the spirit of community.”

Registration, a class photo wall, a campus tour , trivia in the Bobcat Den, and a breakfast with President Garry W. Jenkins were only the beginning of their special weekend.

Welcome back to them! And to all of our Reunion attendees, who are streaming onto campus today to continue the celebration.

For over 30 years, Phyllis Graber Jensen has helped tell the story of Bates.

As she prepares to embark on her next chapter, now, it’s *our* turn to tell hers.

“Phyllis Graber Jensen: Picture Stories,” a new exhibition at the Bates College Museum of Art, celebrates a remarkable career in photojournalism and visual storytelling, from her documentation of the women’s liberation movement in Denmark in the 1970s, to being a staff photographer at the Boston Herald, to her three decades of capturing the depth and detail of life at Bates through her lens.

Join us for the opening reception on Friday, June 12, from 7–9 p.m. as we celebrate the work, artistry, and vision behind so many of the images that have shaped our collective memory of Bates.
