A concert celebrating America's spirit wouldn't be complete without the famous piece by Aaron Copland, "Fanfare for the Common Man." This piece was commissioned by Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra conductor Eugene Goossens for the orchestra's 1942–43 season. The title initially perplexed Goossens, as he had requested patriotic pieces—why would this one honor the "common man?"
Copland went through many potential titles (at least seven!) honoring "heroes" and "freedoms," but he ultimately landed on Fanfare for the Common Man because, "it was the common man, after all, who was doing all the dirty work in the war and in the army. He deserved a fanfare." —Copland
Goossens agreed that the title was "as original as its music" and arranged for the piece to premiere on March 15, 1943. SODELO is honored to bring it to the stage for our July concert, American Spirit, Coastal Soul. Get your tickets now to hear this historic piece and more!

Meet Brian Cox, tuba player for SODELO and composer of Coastal Delaware Suite, premiering in our July Concert: American Spirit, Coastal Soul!
Brian began composing Coastal Delaware Suite in early 2023, after attending one of SODELO’s first-ever concerts. Brian was inspired by the outstanding musicianship and passion of the players, as well as the enthusiastic response of the audience. Clearly, SODELO was filling a void in the region, both for audiences and musicians alike!
Using history and culture as a starting point for his composition, Brian envisioned a piece that paid homage to some of the most iconic images and historic events of the coastal region. The most obvious emblem is, of course, the ocean. Delaware’s coastline is only 28 miles, and if one stands at the northernmost point where land meets sea, Cape Henlopen, the sound of waves lapping the shore is interrupted every 30 seconds by an air-compressed fog signal from the Harbor of Refuge Lighthouse. The pitch “G” sounds vaguely like a French horn, and this was all Brian needed to begin his composition. What follows is a series of musical “postcards,” each with their own unique character, but variations on a common theme.
Please enjoy this short interview with Brian as he walks us through each piece of work, and stay tuned for a full-length interview on Youtube coming soon! But if you want to hear the piece at its world premiere, you should get your tickets now!
