Homeownership used to be a foundational part of the American dream, but many now see it as an unachievable fantasy.

This should not be the case. Lack of affordable housing continues to present challenges in our communities, but the General Assembly has been hard at work to find solutions and introduce legislation that combats those obstacles.

I was proud to introduce Rep. Kendra Johnson's HCR 142 earlier this month to designate June as National Homeownership Month to bring awareness to the work that still needs to be done at the federal, state, and local levels to support Americans still working towards their dream of owning a home.

Here's a snapshot from an early meeting of the Affordable Housing Production Task Force, as a reminder that our years-long work continues and requires many perspectives at the table to develop meaningful solutions.

We know that too many of our neighbors are struggling with housing insecurity, and we must act to ensure that housing development is happening responsibly, and with a focus on smart growth. Today, the Senate passed my legislation, The Housing for Every Delawarean Act, which empowers counties and municipalities to use their zoning authority to create balanced communities in a way that works best for them. This legislation will ensure that counties and municipalities create affordable housing plans, which is key to ensure that Delawareans have access to adequate, affordable housing.

Our local hospital care systems are partnering with the Delaware State Housing Authority (DSHA) to create the Maternal Outreach and Mobile Services (MOMS) program to serve families and pregnant individuals across Kent and Sussex County. By connecting women and families to doulas and necessary prenatal care, they are actively working to build stronger, safer, and healthier outcomes for all mothers and children in our communities. This project will be instrumental in granting extra resources to our healthcare systems – ensuring families receive early access to care and guidance before health concerns become crises.

The next visit by the MOMS team will be May 27 at Laverty Lane in Bridgeville from 11 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
