Who ever said that janitorial jobs are a dead-end career?
To say that cleaning is a dead-end job could not be further from the truth. There are ample opportunities for employees in janitorial roles to advance their careers and expand on their skill set when employed by a company that values them.
A custodian who performs basic cleaning tasks can move up to cleaning carpets and machine scrubbing floors. They can progress from floor cleaning to emergency services. There are even opportunities for janitorial technicians to learn and perform Specialty Services (hard surfaces and carpet restoration).
The possibilities are endless – the sky is the limit! A career path is possible in the janitorial field when both the technician and employer are willing to work together to maximize their efforts. Proper training can open so many doors for employees so that they can become more valuable to the workplace.

Ingredients for Success
What should you look for in a successful janitorial service provider? Here are the necessary “ingredients” that the service provider should possess:
👉 Ability to meet client expectations
👉 Clear scope of work (SOW)
👉 Employees are trained to safely use chemistry & equipment
👉 Quality assurance & supervision from a Facility Services Manager
👉 Appropriate amount of time allocated to complete tasks
When a janitorial service provider is missing even ONE of these ingredients, it can cause a lot of issues for you as the client.
A well-rounded janitorial service provider will provide the client with a “stress free” cleaning service.

Last, but not least!
#5 of the Top 5 Issues with Janitorial Service Providers is:
Failure to Deliver on Promises
It can be frustrating when a janitorial service provider is overpromising but underdelivering when it comes to their services.
Some examples of failure to deliver on promises are:
🔹 The service contract agreement is not being fulfilled by the janitorial service provider
🔹 No one is there to verify that the work is being done
🔹 There is no accountability for any problems that may arise
Over the past few weeks we have talked about the biggest problems that clients face with their janitorial service providers. It is good to keep these things in mind when looking at your current or potential janitorial service provider and the level of service they are providing.

#4 Lack of Communication
The next issue with janitorial service providers that we are going to talk about is lack of communication. Communication is key to build and maintain a good working relationship between the client and the janitorial service provider. Without it, many problems might arise that could have easily been avoided.
Poor communication can result in:
👉 Cleaning crew is managed by the client rather than a Facility Service Manager – The client waits around and tries to communicate with the cleaning crew about requests or cleaning issues
👉 Unexpected changes are being made – A new cleaning crew comes in one day with no notice given
👉 Not knowing what goes on in the facility – an accident or a problem arises during after business hours and no one notifies the client
A lack of communication can damage the trust that a client has in their janitorial service provider. Good communication can be established by keeping track of requests and concerns that the client has and working to meet their expectations. The provider must be proactive in fulfilling the needs of the client to keep them satisfied.

Top 5 Janitorial Issues (continued)
#3 Absence of Effective Quality Control
When it comes to cleaning, it is easy for areas of your facility to be overlooked when there is a lack of quality control measures in place. The last thing you want to do is manage your cleaning crew. If no one is present to check the work, areas may be overlooked or neglected.
Here are some examples of effective quality control from a janitorial service provider:
☑ Janitorial inspections – done to check that the cleaning is being done (and done correctly!)
☑ Communication with client in-person and electronically – Quickly answering any questions the client may have, saving them time
☑ Provides a Facility Service Manager - Acts as a liaison between the client and the janitorial service provider, manages the cleaning crew, & ensures tasks are done in a timely manner
Effective quality control plays a large role in the relationship between the client and janitorial provider. Good communication and oversight of the cleaning by a Facility Service Manager gives you one less thing to worry about.

#2 High Employee Turnover
When it comes to janitorial services, the quality of employees makes a huge difference in the relationship between the client and the service provider. When there is a high rate of employee turnover, this can result in:
⛔ Inconsistencies in cleaning quality
⛔ Security risks due to new people constantly in and out of the facility
⛔ Disappointment from the client when expectations are not met
⛔ Management spending too much time training employees, rather than overseeing the job
As you can see, employee turnover rates can have a large negative impact on janitorial service providers.
