A research team in Dallas put fifty-year-old couch potatoes through a 2-year workout protocol. Their hearts came out twenty years younger. No drugs. No surgery. One specific kind of exercise. Done right. UT Southwestern Medical Center. Published in Circulation, 2018. 61 sedentary adults. Average age 53. Two groups. Two years. When you sit for decades your heart gets smaller. Stiffer. Pumps less efficiently. By sixty, it is a worse pump than it was at thirty. Cardiologists thought this was permanent. They were wrong. The exercise group did this every week: → Norwegian 4x4 once a week. → Two or three vigorous cardio sessions. → One long easy session. → Some strength training. The control group stretched. Their hearts kept aging on schedule. After 24 months. VO2 max up 18 percent. Cardiac stiffness gone. Left ventricular elasticity up 25 percent. Hearts twenty years younger. The Norwegian 4x4. 4 minutes hard. 3 minutes easy. Repeat four times. About 28 minutes total. The catch is the 4 minutes hard. Most people pace themselves. That is not hard. Norwegian 4x4 means 80 to 90 percent of your max heart rate. The original protocol pushes to 95. You should not be able to talk. Gasping. At 75 percent you are still in zone 2. Zone 2 does not reverse cardiac aging. Find your max heart rate. 220 minus your age. Take 80 to 90 percent. Age 50. Target 136 to 153. Age 60. Target 128 to 144. Wear a heart rate monitor. Otherwise you are guessing. Most people who guess go too easy. One Norwegian 4x4 a week. Plus the rest of the cardio. For two years. That is the entire protocol. A pair of shoes and a road.
