Books + adoptable animals = Paws & Pages! And we all know adoptable = cute.

How's that math for a librarian?

In collaboration with Loudoun County Animal Services, LCPL held the first of three summer book clubs for children at the animal shelter. (Props to Ashburn Library staff!) We had 17 kids participate in a lively discussion, followed by a tour of the shelter.

Two more book clubs are coming up in July and August:
-Saturday, July 13, 10 a.m.: https://loudoun.libnet.info/event/10921007
-Saturday, Aug. 10, 10 a.m.: https://loudoun.libnet.info/event/10921071

Collaborations like this are win-win-win situations for the community, our partners and LCPL. Thanks to LCAS for co-hosting this program!

What do these four LCPL programs have in common? They all just won Achievement Awards from the National Association of Counties (NACo)! The awards honor innovative, effective county government programs. Read about them below or click here for the whole news release: https://www.loudoun.gov/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=9166

-Civic Labs: LCPL offers Civic Labs as informal, drop-in events that offer information, interactive elements, takeaway resources and a chance to discuss a topic that affects the community. The program’s purpose is not only educational but is also designed to give the public resources and tangible ways that they can contribute to civic engagement.

-Raising Awareness of the Law Library: Recognizing that public access to legal information is a critical component of open and equal access to the justice system, the Loudoun County Public Library has worked to increase awareness of the Law Library’s services. “Meet the Law Librarian” programs at various branches have highlighted the various resources available at the law library, including legal information for self-represented litigants, legal professionals, the judiciary and other governmental officials.

-Spoke’n Word Bike Event: LCPL has created a Spoke‘n Word Bike Event series that reaches a new audience in a novel way, using the unique local landmark of the Washington & Old Dominion trail as a centerpiece. LCPL partnered with Friends of the W&OD Trail and Bike Loudoun to stage events along the trail, highlighting partnerships as well as offering opportunities to provide information about library services.

-Teen Micro Art Gallery: To supply a need for fine art opportunities for teens, LCPL created a Teen Micro Art Gallery where young artists can create, curate, and display original “micro” artwork. The goal of the program is to inspire teens by encouraging active learning and personal development through the visual arts. The initiative has created an innovative artistic outlet for local youth and partnerships and collaborations with schools, nonprofits and established artists in the community who have provided teen artists with career advice and mentorship.

Grab your furry friend and enjoy this story from Loudoun County Law Library. You never know where inspiration will strike!

"A few years ago, we started giving out dog treats during Dog Walking Month, along with brochures that highlighted laws about dog ownership in Virginia. One of the dogs that loved stopping by, JoJo, belonged to a man who was between jobs. He got the idea to write a children’s book about the things he learned while walking around town with JoJo.

Fast forward to today: He has published his book, in which the Law Library received a very nice dedication. Thanks to JoJo and his human!"

Maker Monday at Sterling Library: Lots of people come into the LCPL makerspaces asking, "What can I do in here?" All you can imagine and beyond! This customer experimented with sublimating designs onto unusual materials. In the end, it looked like it had been painted! Read on to hear about their process or find out about upcoming sublimation workshops at https://buff.ly/4cgloK8.

From the maker: "First, I laid butcher paper down in the heat press. Next, I placed a wooden laser-cut word on the paper, and covered the word with leftover film from the laminator. I used the heat press to laminate on the wood, and then I pressed the design on top of the laminate. Finally, I used an X-acto knife to cut off the excess. Voila! The staff was very helpful as we figured this out. Will be back with more projects!"
